Role

The Mental Health Practitioner will work in collaboration with the Department of Education to provide mental health and wellbeing support to students in government schools. The role will involve enhancing mental health prevention and promotion activities in the school, providing early intervention services for students at-risk, and coordinating supports for students with complex needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement mental health and wellbeing programs in the school, in collaboration with teaching staff and school leadership.
  • Provide individual and group counselling services to students, including short-term therapy and support.
  • Work with regional mental health services and other health professionals to engage further support for students with complex needs.
  • Contribute to whole-school health and wellbeing plans, and help develop and deliver programs and strategies to promote student mental health and wellbeing.
  • Collaborate with other department areas, including secondary school nurses and Student Support Services staff, to provide comprehensive support to students.

Requirements

  • Qualifications as a psychologist, social worker, mental health nurse, occupational therapist, or counsellor of a prescribed class.
  • Demonstrated experience in direct counselling and mental health support.
  • Current Working With Children Check.

Desirable

  • Specialisation in educational and/or developmental psychology for psychologists.
  • Mental Health Nurse Credential and membership with the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses for mental health nurses.
  • Membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers and an Accredited Social Worker Trade Mark for social workers.
  • Occupational Therapy applicants with a Better Access to Mental Health Endorsement.
  • Counselling applicants with Level 3-4 registration (ACA) or a Registered Clinical Counsellor endorsement (PACFA).
