Radiation Oncology Physicist

The Radiation Oncology Physicist is responsible for overseeing all facets of radiation modalities, including radiation oncology dosimetry, diagnostic imaging, nuclear medicine, and participation in the radiation safety committee. This role involves directing the team in delivering comprehensive radiation oncology services across all patient age groups.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required: A minimum of a master's degree in medical and/or radiological physics; eligibility or certification by the American Board of Radiology in physics; and active membership in AAPM and ASTRO.
Lic/Reg/Cert: Board eligibility or certification by the American Board of Radiology in physics is required.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS
This position entails significant physical demands that are infrequent. The role requires excellent manual dexterity, visual acuity, and strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in high-pressure situations. The candidate should be self-motivated and capable of working independently to fulfill essential job functions.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Collaborates closely with physicians and the Director of the Cancer Treatment Center on all operational aspects of radiation oncology.
- Evaluates the skills and competencies of technical staff assigned to radiation oncology.
- Manages all radiation oncology equipment to ensure optimal functionality.
- Ensures that mechanical and radiation safety protocols for patients and staff are upheld.
- Maintains current knowledge of departmental and hospital Radiation Safety policies.
- Designs and assesses computer treatment plans, evaluates patient data, and verifies the accuracy of treatment plans through computational algorithms.
- Conducts monthly and annual quality improvement checks and calibrations.
- Actively participates in the Radiation Safety Committee.
- As the Radiation Safety Officer, ensures compliance with all components of the radioactive materials license, ensuring it remains current in both Radiation Oncology and Nuclear Medicine Departments.
- Supervises the quality assurance program for Nuclear Medicine.
- Recommends the acquisition of new equipment to the administration through the Director of the Cancer Treatment Center.
- Assesses the physical needs and functional status of patients to provide appropriate care.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
