Position Overview: Within the surgical department, the surgical technologist plays a crucial role in supporting nursing care and surgical services under the direct supervision of registered nurses and physicians.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification required within 30 days of hire.
  • Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology Program.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least one year of experience in surgical technology.

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

The following responsibilities are representative of the essential functions of this position:

  • Prepare for scheduled surgical cases by gathering necessary supplies and instruments.
  • Assist in the safe transport of patients to the operating room and ensure proper positioning on the operating table.
  • Confirm the accuracy of the surgical site and procedure to adhere to national patient safety goals.
  • Perform surgical scrubbing and assist in the donning of sterile gloves and gowns for surgeons and staff.
  • Account for instruments, sharps, and sponges used during surgical procedures.
  • Identify, prepare, and accurately pass surgical instruments to the surgeon.
  • Assist in the cleanup of the operating room, including the transportation of instruments and disposal of waste.
  • Follow infection control policies and procedures diligently.

Assistance with Endoscopic Procedures:

  • Support the surgeon/physician with proper patient positioning and the cleaning/disinfecting of endoscopes.
  • Assist in the decontamination of surgical instruments and monitor sterilization processes.
  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality at all times.
  • Stock supplies in relevant areas and perform regular checks as needed.
  • Assist registered nurses and physicians as directed.
  • Obtain vital signs as required.
  • Help with administrative tasks such as preparing chart packets and maintaining cleanliness.

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands of this position include:

  • Ability to lift and move materials and equipment weighing over 40 lbs.

  • Collaboration with team members.
  • Potential for irregular hours.
  • Exposure to biohazards and infectious diseases.
  • Working with hands in water and around patient care equipment.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of aseptic and sterile techniques.

This position is classified as non-exempt and is part of the UHC Nursing Operating Room team.
