Job Overview

The Theatrical Production Assistant collaborates with the Performing Arts Production Team to effectively implement a variety of Performing Arts Programs, which encompass creative development, residencies, dance performances, concerts, theatrical shows, and music festivals. This role involves providing essential stage support within the production team, including the construction of seating risers and scenic elements as required for each event. Familiarity with audio and lighting systems is advantageous.

Key Responsibilities

The Theatrical Production Assistant will undertake a range of tasks associated with live theatrical events, including:

  • Transporting set pieces, scenery, furniture, and props.
  • Managing and rigging ropes, wires, pulleys, and other mechanisms used for raising or lowering scenery and equipment, such as curtains and backdrops.
  • Performing carpentry tasks, including set construction, facility repairs, and renovations as assigned.

This position serves as the primary contact during the assembly of seating risers and stage setups, as well as the construction of outdoor venues. Responsibilities for seating riser and stage assembly include maintaining decks and legs, as well as ensuring cleanliness prior to audience entry.

Work Environment

MASS MoCA operates two indoor theater venues and seasonal outdoor spaces, including a small club-style venue and a large black box theater. The Theatrical Production Assistant will aid in the safe assembly and operation of staging in all venues, supported by a production crew.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • General knowledge of various power tools, including chop saws, table saws, screw guns, drills, and sanders.
  • Interest and basic understanding of stagecraft.
  • Valid driver's license required; responsibilities include driving, loading/unloading, and packing trucks ranging from 16 to 40 feet.
  • Ability to operate or willingness to learn to operate Genie, Condor, and Scissor lifts.
  • Familiarity with stagecraft, lighting, audio, and video systems.
  • Experience with reading and executing CAD and Vectorworks drawings is preferred, or a willingness to learn.
Working Conditions
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required for events and programs.
  • Potential for overtime hours.
  • Work may occur in dimly lit environments and may involve exposure to strobe lights or other photo-sensitive conditions.
  • Most work will be indoors, but some events may require outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to work overhead for extended periods while rigging audio and lighting equipment.
  • Capacity to lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and crouch for prolonged periods.
  • Proficiency in using ladders, lifts, and scaffolding safely.
  • Compliance with personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements when necessary.

Starting pay is $19.00 per hour.
