This position reports directly to the Chief Underwriting Officer of Markel Specialty, overseeing the Casualty sector and managing various products and teams to ensure profitability within this line. This role entails leading a team focused on achieving financial objectives through the formulation of underwriting strategies, nurturing underwriting talent, managing portfolios, and delivering products to partners and clients.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Fostering a high-performance culture among product line leaders to devise and implement strategies aimed at achieving underwriting profitability.
- Monitoring performance metrics and facilitating the alignment of business plans.
- Collaborating with leadership across Markel Specialty Retail, Wholesale, and Alternative Distribution to develop national and regional strategies for the Casualty product line.
- Working across various business units, including claims, distribution, and loss control, to ensure a cohesive approach to product development and customer service.
- Enhancing understanding and expertise within the line of business across platforms.
- Staying informed about current industry trends and emerging issues.
- Creating and executing strategies to manage corporate capacity on accounts.
- Promoting talent development and providing advancement opportunities for team members.
- Building depth within the underwriting organization and leveraging talent in product line management.
- Aligning underwriting teams at the line of business level.
- Improving Markel's ability to recognize and respond to competitive pressures while identifying opportunities.
- Encouraging thought leadership participation in line of business initiatives.
- Supporting the Chief Underwriting Officer on topics related to the line of business, including emerging risks.
- Acting as a referral executive for the line of business to ensure risks are managed within acceptable parameters.
- Identifying, tracking, and implementing actions to address industry trends and emerging risks.
- Contributing to reinsurance purchasing decisions.
- Establishing policies and guidelines that encompass the underwriting organization.
- Leading long-term growth strategies for the line of business.
- A minimum of 20 years of underwriting experience with a proven track record of profitable growth.
- A comprehensive background in the line of business, with experience in both small and large accounts; primary, excess, admitted, and non-admitted products.
- Experience across all distribution channels with a solid reputation in the industry.
- A demonstrated history of product leadership, including team building.
- US Work Authorization is required; Markel does not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
- In-depth technical knowledge of Casualty lines.
- Strong portfolio management skills.
- Exceptional interpersonal, management, and communication abilities.
- Robust analytical skills and excellent problem-solving capabilities.
- Ability to thrive in a matrix environment, providing leadership and fostering teamwork across the organization.
- A willingness to embrace technology and data in underwriting and portfolio management.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Outlook, Visio, Word, PowerPoint).
- A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited institution.
- Insurance/Reinsurance designations are preferred.
