Job Overview

The role of the Special Needs Instructional Support Specialist is to assist in the educational process within designated classrooms, specifically aimed at supporting the supervision, care, and teaching of students with special requirements. This position involves implementing instructional strategies, monitoring student behavior, and collaborating with educational staff to ensure a conducive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Modify classroom activities, assignments, and materials under the guidance of a supervising educator to reinforce individualized education program (IEP) goals and ensure inclusive participation for all students.
  • Deliver instruction to students in various individual and group settings, including subjects such as mathematics, science, and social skills, to support educational objectives and enhance student success.
  • Assist educators in administering assessments and reviewing student assignments.
  • Aid students with special needs in personal care tasks, including grooming and mobility, to promote independence and well-being.
  • Collaborate with teaching staff to communicate student progress and address any challenges that arise.
  • Regularly confer with educators to assess student progress and refine IEP implementation.
  • Execute behavioral intervention strategies under the direction of the supervising teacher to reinforce learning concepts.
  • Supervise students with special needs in various settings to maintain a safe and supportive educational atmosphere.
  • Conduct record-keeping and data collection tasks to assist teachers in maintaining accurate student records.
  • Respond to emergency situations to ensure student safety and well-being.
  • Uphold confidentiality and adhere to Board of Education policies.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Working Conditions

The responsibilities of this position may require physical strength, mental acuity, and mobility to fulfill job duties effectively. Candidates should be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds and possess the ability to assist students with various physical needs. The work environment is generally clean and healthy, conducive to educational activities.

Qualifications/Education/Certifications:
  • An Associate's degree or equivalent educational background is required.
  • Completion of a minimum of 48 semester hours at a regionally accredited institution is acceptable.
  • Successful completion of the Alabama State Board of Education approved WorkKeys test may also be considered.
  • Other qualifications as deemed appropriate by the Board may be accepted.
