Overview:

The Breast Imaging Specialist operates under the guidance of a licensed mammography technologist and a Radiologist. This role necessitates strict adherence to compliance policies and relevant regulations. Responsibilities may evolve in response to departmental needs and advancements in medical technology. The incumbent may also be tasked with additional related duties as required.

In collaboration with the Radiologist and following established protocols, the specialist is responsible for operating mammography equipment to capture imaging as per Radiologist specifications. The role includes assisting the Radiologist in various sterile procedures and providing care to patients across all age groups who require mammography services.

Key Responsibilities:

1) Ensures accurate identification of all patients in accordance with established protocols. Reviews authorization forms for patient history and the exams to be conducted. Confirms ordered exams with the referring physician or radiologist when necessary.

2) Proficiently operates the Radiology and Mammography information systems relevant to job functions. Maintains knowledge of operational manuals and manufacturer guidelines for safe use of mammography, stereotactic, and ultrasound equipment.

3) Executes the duties of a clinical mammography technologist, which includes patient positioning, compression, exposure, film labeling, processing, and computer-assisted detection. Reviews diagnostic images with the radiologist to ensure completeness.

4) Acts as a liaison with hospital staff to ensure timely and coordinated services while maintaining patient confidentiality.

5) Assists in various interventional procedures, including Stereotactic Breast biopsy and Ultrasound Core biopsy, while managing the documentation of specimens for pathology review.

6) Responsible for quality control of mammography units and related equipment in compliance with MQSA standards.

7) Participates in departmental quality assurance initiatives.

8) Aids in maintaining inventory within the stock room.

Required Qualifications:

1) Graduate of an accredited radiography program. ARRT R certification.

2) Completion of an accredited Radiological Sciences Program or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

1) One year of experience in radiography.

Skills and Competencies:

1) Must complete 200 mammograms within six months under supervision.

2) Must obtain 15 dedicated digital mammography credits.

Associate of Science in Radiological Science (Required)

Certifications:

Basic Life Support - American Heart Association, Imaging Modality Certification - Other, Radiography - American Registry of Radiologic Technologist
