Automotive Technician

Position Overview:
This role involves executing proficient repair tasks and maintaining a diverse range of municipal vehicles, trucks, and machinery. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) must be acquired within six months of starting the position.

Key Responsibilities:
- Conducts skilled mechanical work in the upkeep and repair of various diesel and gasoline vehicles and auxiliary machinery, including vans with lifts, passenger buses, dump trucks, sweepers, and pickup trucks.
- Performs repairs and overhauls on mechanical components of buses, cars, specialized trucks, and other municipal equipment.
- Inspects, tests, adjusts, repairs, and replaces integral parts of diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, and more.
- Diagnoses issues and fine-tunes engine, fuel, electrical, and mechanical systems to meet specifications, including electronic fuel injection systems.
- Replaces or repairs engine components such as fuel injectors, rods, and bearings; aligns rods, grinds valves, and adjusts tappets.
- Tunes engines by installing new components and cleaning spark plugs; sets or installs carburetors as needed.
- May provide training to other staff members.
- Performs additional related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Three to five years of experience as an automotive mechanic.
- Vocational training in a related field is preferred; a combination of education and experience will be considered.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Understanding of the principles of internal combustion engine operation and maintenance.
- Familiarity with tools, equipment, and technology used in automotive repair.
- Awareness of safety hazards and precautions in the automotive repair industry.
- Proficient in using and maintaining mechanical tools and equipment.
- Ability to diagnose and repair a wide range of automotive equipment issues.
- Capability to adapt to various types of equipment repaired in the workshop.
- Competence in operating gas and arc welding equipment for fabrication tasks.
- Willingness to learn new technologies and terminologies related to modern automotive equipment.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and colleagues.
- Must obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of employment.

Supervision:
The Purchasing Director provides general instructions for work assignments. The supervisor reviews ongoing work and completed tasks for quality and compliance.

Guidelines:
Work is governed by City codes, departmental policies, safety procedures, and supervisory instructions, which may require interpretation.
