Responsible for executing intricate repairs and diagnosing various mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues associated with maintenance support across different departments.

Duties may vary based on the assigned section.

Key Responsibilities:

Conducts inspections, diagnoses, services, repairs, and performs routine maintenance on both gas and diesel-powered heavy trucks, road maintenance machinery, and other related equipment.

Engages in advanced diagnostics of vehicles utilizing computer systems or manuals.

Repairs engines, transmissions, braking systems, electrical systems, air conditioning units, fuel systems, computer systems, emissions systems, and components, and performs wheel alignments.

Handles additional vehicular mechanical repairs as required.
Maintains emergency response vehicles.
Documents service records for work completed, including labor and parts utilized.
Initiates purchase orders and distributes parts, supplies, tools, and equipment as needed.
Responds to emergency roadside assistance requests for disabled city vehicles and machinery.
Provides recommendations for repair, modification, and disposal of equipment, tools, and vehicles.
Utilizes a diverse range of testing equipment.
Maintains and repairs equipment related to fuel delivery and sites to ensure a clean and safe environment.

Refers service support to other departmental facilities as necessary, coordinating the prioritization and completion of service for other departmental equipment.


Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED with additional vocational training or certification in automotive repair or a related field; three years of automotive repair experience, including one year at the journeyman level in the repair and maintenance of gas and diesel-powered heavy trucks, road maintenance machinery, and other related equipment.

Must possess a valid driver's license. Must obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL) within six months of commencing employment in this role. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.

Knowledge and Skills:

Familiarity with standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment utilized in the repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and engines.

Awareness of safety protocols in the use of tools, equipment, and supplies employed in the repair of motorized vehicles and machinery.

Proficiency in the use of various hand tools.
Expertise in gas and electric welding equipment.
Competence in using mechanized tools, jacks, and hoists.
Skill in employing a variety of diagnostic testing and tuning equipment.
Ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic failures.
Capability to interpret manuals and schematics.
Ability to rebuild engines and major driveline components.
Ability to communicate effectively with fellow mechanics regarding necessary repairs.
Ability to organize and coordinate vehicle work.
Ability to establish work priorities.

Supervisory Controls:
The Fleet Superintendent assigns tasks based on general instructions. The supervisor conducts spot checks on work in progress and reviews completed work for quality and appropriateness of results.

Guidelines:
Guidelines include city codes, departmental and safety policies and procedures, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

Complexity:

This position encompasses a variety of body repair and mechanical tasks across a range of automobiles and equipment.


Scope and Impact:
This role is crucial for ensuring the safe, effective, and efficient operation of the City Fleet.

Personal Contacts:
Interaction is primarily with other team members.

Purpose of Contacts:
Contacts are for information sharing and work coordination.

Physical Demands:
The work typically involves the employee alternating between sitting, standing, walking, and bending, crouching, or stooping.

The employee must frequently lift both light and heavy objects, climb ladders, and utilize tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.


Work Environment:

Most repair tasks are conducted in a workshop; occasionally, equipment repairs are performed in the field, which may involve hazardous conditions.

The role entails considerable physical activity with exposure to safety hazards typically associated with general vehicle and equipment repair.
