JOB SUMMARY:
This role involves conducting inspections to ensure adherence to city regulations and accepted standards regarding the installation and functioning of mechanical systems and equipment. The incumbent is tasked with evaluating various mechanical installations, particularly those related to air conditioning, heating, and refrigeration systems, to guarantee compliance with the quality, material, workmanship, and safety standards as dictated by the Florida building code. The employee typically operates independently during field inspections, making decisions that require technical judgment and discretion; however, they may consult with their supervisor on more complex or unusual cases. The work is subject to periodic reviews and investigations and is under the general supervision of the Chief Mechanical Inspector.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Conducts inspections on new and existing air conditioning and refrigeration installations in residential, commercial, and industrial settings to ensure compliance with safety standards, laws, and ordinances; verifies plans and workmanship to confirm that mechanical work meets codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Assesses existing power sources to confirm their capacity to handle additional loads safely.
  • Documents and maintains records of inspections performed.
  • Participates in seminars and training sessions to stay updated on new developments in the field and to acquire current information regarding code changes.
  • Must effectively and positively represent the City in delivering and performing work with colleagues and clients, irrespective of gender, race, religion, age, disability, political affiliation or belief, or sexual orientation.
  • Must establish and maintain effective and professional relationships with work colleagues, supervisors, and managers.
  • Performs related duties as necessary for this position.
THE REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Required:
1. High School Diploma or GED equivalent plus five (5) years' experience as a Mechanical Contractor in a supervisory capacity on a variety of electrical and related installations supplemented by the following additional qualifications set forth in the Florida Building Code:

2. As required by the Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board (BCAIB), certified as a Mechanical Inspector from the Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals (BORA) and meet at least one of the following qualifications:

  1. Engineer in the mechanical discipline OR
  2. Five (5) years construction experience in the mechanical discipline in a supervisory capacity and possess a Certificate of Competency as a Master or Mechanical Contractor OR
  3. Five (5) years construction experience in the mechanical discipline and five (5) years' experience as a Mechanical Inspector certified by BCAIB and possess a Certificate of Competency as a Master or Mechanical Contractor OR
  4. Seven (7) years construction experience in the mechanical discipline and possess a Certificate of Competency as a Master OR
  5. Ten (10) years' experience as a Mechanical Inspector certified by BCAIB
3. Current Certificate of Competency or Professional License as a Master or Mechanical Contractor which must be issued by at least one of the following entities:
  • Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board
  • Broward County Central Examining Board
  • Miami Dade County Construction Trades Qualifying Board
  • Florida Board of Professional Engineers
Additional education and experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be substituted for the above requirements.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
  • Mechanical Contractor License Class A
  • Master Mechanical Certificate of Competency
  • Valid Driver's License: With proof of automobile insurance
  • Background Check: Must have an acceptable background record
  • Driving Abstract: Must have an acceptable driving record
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices involved in installing, maintaining, and operating a variety of air conditioning, heating, or refrigeration equipment and appliances.
  • Knowledge of possible faults and effects in refrigeration systems and appliances and of standard specifications and devices and corrective measures.
  • Knowledge of local and national building codes as they apply to air conditioning, refrigeration, and other mechanical installations and appliances.
  • Ability to detect and locate defective workmanship and operations at any stage of the installation.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional relationships with work colleagues, supervisors, managers, and the public.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Depending on functional area of assignment, tasks involve the periodic performance of moderately physically demanding work, usually involving lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (up to 50 pounds). Tasks that require moving objects of significant weight require the assistance of another person and/or use of proper techniques and moving equipment. Tasks may involve some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station and extended periods of time standing and/or walking.
