KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Interprets and inputs physician orders into the system.
  • Dispenses medication orders, including the aseptic compounding of IV solutions and cytotoxic agents.
  • Ensures accurate setup and verification of medication cassettes.
  • Monitors drug therapies for contraindications, interactions, and dosing errors, considering specific age groups.
  • Communicates with medical and nursing staff as necessary.
  • Provides drug information to healthcare personnel as needed.
  • Distributes controlled substances to patient care areas while maintaining compliance with legal and hospital policies.
  • Conducts inventories of controlled substances as per pharmacy protocols.
  • Engages in Quality Improvement initiatives within the department, including:
A. Conducting drug usage evaluations.

B. Monitoring for suspected adverse drug reactions.

C. Documenting errors in technician filling and dispensing.
  • Practices the profession of pharmacy with professionalism.
  • Maintains a professional image and a high level of competency.
  • Adheres to all relevant hospital policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Assists in the training and orientation of new pharmacists, technicians, and support staff; supervises their activities.
  • Delivers in-service education programs for physicians, nurses, pharmacy staff, and the community as required.
  • Contributes to the pharmacy newsletter.
  • Counsels patients on medication usage, side effects, precautions, and storage.
  • Participates in inventory management, including ordering and monitoring usage.
  • Conducts monthly inspections of nursing units; attends and participates in relevant programs, committees, and meetings.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the Director.
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited institution.
  • Current licensure to practice pharmacy in the relevant state or eligibility for licensure through examination or reciprocity. An ASHP residency or equivalent hospital pharmacy experience is preferred.
  • Experience with pharmacy computer systems is advantageous.
  • Ability to independently plan and organize work assignments effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Demonstrated initiative and capability to achieve high performance standards.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments under time constraints.
  • Possesses analytical, problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Manual dexterity to utilize tools and equipment effectively.
  • Ability to perceive depth, distance, and quality of work; read materials and documents.
  • Ability to hear inquiries from patients, physicians, clients, or staff.
  • Capability to move objects weighing up to 20 lbs. in a timely manner, with potential exposure to hazardous materials.
