Job Summary

The State of Connecticut is seeking a highly skilled Transportation Materials Technician 3 to join our team in the Department of Transportation, Division of Materials Testing. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for performing complex tasks in materials testing, field and laboratory inspections, and ensuring the quality of construction and maintenance materials used in transportation facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as a working lead and/or perform complex tasks in materials testing, field and laboratory inspections.
  • Conduct or assist in conducting performance evaluations and provide staff training and assistance.
  • Recommend policies and standards, and prepare reports and correspondence of tests and analyses.
  • Perform related duties as required, including leading a team of technicians and managing seasonal fluctuations in material samples tested and documentation processed.
Requirements
  • Considerable knowledge of physical and/or chemical properties, specifications, and uses of construction materials.
  • Considerable skills in performing calculations, interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills.
  • Considerable ability to perform chemical and/or physical tests and analyses, and calibrate equipment and standardize reagents.
  • Ability to utilize computer software and lead a team.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Bluebeam, Microsoft Excel, creating spreadsheets, inputting data, and creating graphs, and other Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience performing mathematical computations, preparing documents such as material testing and inspection reports, and reviewing hot mix asphalt producer documents.
  • Experience communicating verbally and in writing with teammates and stakeholders of all levels.
  • Possession of the Northeast Transportation Training and Certification Program (NETTCP) Asphalt Plant Technician Certification.
Working Conditions

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some risk of injury due to toxic fumes, chemicals, dust, or heavy machinery or equipment; may occasionally be required to lift heavy objects; may be exposed to environmental conditions such as noise or heavy traffic.
