About Our Job

The City and County of Denver is seeking a skilled Building Engineer II to join its Maintenance Division. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for maintaining and operating complex environmental control systems, including HVAC, electrical, and mechanical components.

This is a unique opportunity to work in a dynamic and diverse environment, with a stable schedule of working 4 consecutive 10-hour shifts. You will be based at various locations, including the Denver County Jail and the new Van Cise Simonet detention facilities.

As a Building Engineer II, you will be working around detainees/inmates, so you must be comfortable with this aspect of the job. You will also be required to work various shifts, including nights and weekends, as our facilities operate 24/7.

Job Duties
  1. Maintains and operates specialized, complex, or unusual automated and mechanical environmental control systems.
  2. Monitors and programs master controls, calibrates and coordinates sequencing of controls, oversees and monitors power supply systems, troubleshoots and diagnoses systems errors, and makes corrections to maintain building and facility temperatures and environmental conditions.
  3. Maintains, operates, and repairs building and facility equipment related to environmental control systems, including electrical and mechanical components, plumbing and sewage systems, heating and air conditioning systems, ventilation and air handling systems, cold and hot water systems, electrical and fuel-operated generators, and fire protection and detection systems.
  4. Performs routine and non-routine preventative maintenance based on operating procedures and regularly scheduled maintenance activities of equipment, and regularly inspects facilities, buildings, and grounds for unsafe or malfunctioning systems and conditions.
  5. Assists other trades personnel in the maintenance and repair of building and facility infrastructure and equipment, including the installation and modification of equipment.
  6. Plans and leads the maintenance and installation of major building and facility equipment repairs and related activities within a variety of specific trades areas, including the evaluation and recommendation of service upgrades.
  7. Responds to building and facility tenant complaints regarding safety issues and environmental control conditions, including following up on work orders, and prioritizing service calls.
  8. Assists in coordinating maintenance efforts with outside contractors and technicians regarding contracted service agreements.
  9. Provides input to supervisors and managers responsible for planning and controlling annual budgets.
  10. Orders parts and supplies as required and maintains stock and inventory control.
  11. Operates and maintains tools and equipment common to various skilled trades.
  12. Maintains records and prepares reports, including estimating materials, labor, and equipment costs.
About You

We are looking for a skilled and experienced HVAC specialist who is comfortable working in a jail setting. You should have a strong background in commercial service and be able to work independently, as well as part of a team.

You should also be able to learn new skills and be willing to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of HVAC systems, including installation, maintenance, and repair. You should also have experience working with electrical and mechanical components, as well as plumbing and sewage systems.

A valid driver's license is required, and you should be willing to work in a variety of environments, including the Denver County Jail and the new Van Cise Simonet detention facilities.

Requirements
  • Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET, or TASC.
  • Four (4) years of experience in building operations, engineering, and equipment and systems maintenance.
  • A valid journey certificate of qualification or equivalency as required in trades specialty issued by the City and County of Denver or a valid journey license issued by the State of Colorado by the end of probationary period.
  • CFC certification or equivalent is a requirement.
License/Certifications

This job requires driving. Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of position, requires either a valid journey certificate of qualification or equivalency as required in trades specialty issued by the City and County of Denver or a valid journey license issued by the State of Colorado by the end of probationary period.
