Radiation Safety Officer Job Description

At Dartmouth Health, we are seeking a highly skilled Radiation Safety Officer to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring compliance with New Hampshire Rules for Control of Radiation (NHRCR) and developing and enforcing radiation safety policy and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Maintain accurate documentation of all activities as required by the NHRCR.
  2. Participate in the DHMC Safety Committee and the Radiation Safety Committee, providing updates on relevant actions.
  3. Coordinate and review radiation disaster and decontamination drills, ensuring procedures are up-to-date.
  4. Act as Laser Safety Officer (LSO) and contribute to the Laser Safety Committee.
  5. Develop and implement a laser safety program in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  6. Manage the inventory of radiation-producing machines at D-H, ensuring registration is current with the Bureau of Radiological Health.
  7. Perform shielding calculations for areas where radiation-producing machines will be used.
  8. Verify the accuracy of radiation surveys to ensure shielding calculations are correct.
  9. Ensure regular calibration and characterization of radiation-producing machines are performed as specified by the NHRCR.
  10. Verify that all personnel using, repairing, or maintaining radiation-producing machines have received proper training and are knowledgeable in safe use.
  11. Provide training to personnel on the safe use of radiation-producing machines and associated health risks.
  12. Investigate overexposure, accidents, spills, losses, thefts, unauthorized receipts, uses, transfers, disposal, misadministration, and other deviations from approved radiation safety practice.
  13. Implement and enforce written policies and procedures.
  14. Approve or disapprove radiation safety program changes with the advice and consent of management prior to submission to the DHHS/BRH for licensing action.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree and 5 years of experience required.
  • Appropriate certification in health physics or radiation safety, with a minimum of one year of experience as a full-time radiation safety officer in a medical environment.
  • Other board certification may be accepted.
