Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the execution of aquatic programs such as lap swimming, swim lessons, swim team, and group fitness classes.
  • Deliver classes that enhance retention of current members and attract new participants.
  • Support the supervision of departmental staff, ensuring adherence to all safety and policy standards.
  • Guide staff in promoting aquatic initiatives to meet retention targets.
  • Perform lifeguarding duties, instruct swim lessons, coach swim teams, and manage aquatics programs as scheduled or to provide coverage as needed.
  • Maintain precise aquatic schedules and procedures to maximize opportunities for member and staff interactions.
  • Collaborate with department leaders to optimize program registrations and pool utilization.
  • Work with the Facility Director to coordinate regular pool inspections, ensuring optimal and efficient operations at all times. Schedule maintenance and repairs for the pool and equipment, procuring supplies as approved.
  • Oversee daily operations to comply with all state, local, and YMCA of Central Florida health and safety regulations.
  • Ensure all staff maintain current certifications and comply with necessary documentation for pool operations.
  • Utilize available technology and reporting tools to enhance aquatics participation and member retention.
  • Assist in planning and executing aquatic events at the Family Center, promoting these events within the community.
Qualifications
  • Associate's degree or equivalent required; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • 1 - 3 years of experience in aquatics or a customer service-related field required.
  • Experience in YMCA aquatics or operations is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office is required.
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications are mandatory.
  • Current Oxygen Administration certification is required.
  • Current Lifeguard certification is necessary (YMCA Lifeguard certification preferred; Red Cross Lifeguard certification is acceptable but must obtain YMCA certification within 60 days).
  • Current YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certification is required within 60 days.
  • Current YMCA Pool Operator on Location certification or Certified Pool Operator is required.
  • Trainer and YMCA Aquatic Management certifications are advantageous.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills are essential.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, along with critical thinking abilities, are required.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail are necessary.
  • A desire and ability to work with individuals of all ages is important.
  • Demonstrated responsibility and dependability are crucial.
  • Must exhibit patience, sensitivity, and understanding.
Working Conditions
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, which may include weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Must be available for an on-call schedule rotation as required.
  • The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate to loud.
  • May be required to work outdoors for extended periods and may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and wet/humid environments in swimming pool areas.
  • Must possess auditory, verbal, and visual capabilities to communicate effectively via phone and in person.
  • Must have the physical ability to perform strenuous tasks necessary for professional water rescues.
  • Must be able to handle hazardous chemicals (e.g., pool chemicals, cleaning solutions, disinfectants).
  • Must possess the physical ability to pass a lifeguard water test and perform strenuous tasks necessary for professional water rescues.
  • Must remain alert at all times, prioritizing safety.
  • May be required to sit or stand for extended periods while demonstrating manual dexterity to work on the phone, computer keyboard, and other equipment.
  • While performing job duties, the employee is regularly required to use a computer for extended periods and must be able to communicate effectively using a computer and phone/smart device.
