About the Role

Johns Hopkins University Press is seeking an experienced Acquisitions Editor to join our team. As a key member of our editorial department, you will be responsible for acquiring trade and professional books in the Sciences, working closely with authors, series editors, and other stakeholders to bring high-quality publications to market.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in publishing, with a proven track record of acquiring and developing successful book projects. You will be responsible for commissioning and reviewing book proposals, negotiating contracts, and working with authors and series editors to ensure the highest quality publications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Commission and review book proposals, working with authors and series editors to develop high-quality publications.
  • Negotiate contracts with authors, agents, and other stakeholders to ensure the best possible outcomes for the Press.
  • Work closely with the Editorial Director to develop and implement editorial strategies, including the selection of book projects and the management of series.
  • Represent the Press at academic meetings and book exhibits, promoting our publications and building relationships with authors and series editors.
  • Participate in professional communities associated with the editor's field, staying up-to-date with the latest research and developments in the Sciences.
  • Collaborate with staff in Manuscript Editing, Design and Production, Marketing, and Finance to ensure that books are published to the highest standards.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Five (5) years of related publishing experience required.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience in accordance with the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience acquiring trade, professional, and scholarly books for publication and building book lists of national reputation.
  • Outstanding research, writing, speaking, and presentation skills. Exceptional editorial, business, and negotiation skills. Knowledge of publishing arrangements, contracts, peer review, and copyright.
  • Extensive communication and collaboration are required with academics, authors, series editors, press colleagues, and other stakeholders. Deals with confidential information and/or issues (including peer reviews and publishing agreements) using discretion and judgment.
What We Offer

Johns Hopkins University Press offers a competitive salary range of $73,300 to $100,800, commensurate with experience. We also offer a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement savings, and paid time off.
