We are seeking a highly skilled Respiratory Therapist to join our Pediatric Transport team at Advocate Aurora Health. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for providing comprehensive respiratory care to critically ill or injured patients, including neonates, pediatrics, and adults with pediatric chronic diseases, in a mobile environment.
Key Responsibilities- Patient Care Activities
- Obtain pertinent patient histories and incorporate them into the plan of care.
- Perform physical examinations related to respiratory practice.
- Formulate differential diagnoses and plans of care in collaboration with the Transport RN and Transport Medical Control Physician.
- Recognize and treat changes in clinical situations, including life-threatening conditions, and implement changes to the transport plan of care based on standing transport protocols and TMCP recommendations.
- Exercise independent judgment in situations when sudden clinical changes occur and understand and implement necessary interventions and their expected outcomes based on transport protocols and TMCP recommendations.
- Assuring Safety and Quality of Care
- Wear appropriate uniforms and boots according to policy and role model to peers.
- Obtain transport consents, including consent for treatment and transfer, and ensure understanding of information to guardians prior to obtaining consents.
- Complete independent verification during interfacility transfers for the RN on required medications.
- Take a leadership role in achieving unit compliance with Transport Program accreditation for CAMTS and actively participate in the Quality and Safety plan of the department.
- Consistently utilize risk assessment/reduction strategies and role model this behavior to coworkers.
- Operation of Transport Equipment/Vehicle Procedures
- Demonstrate expert knowledge and operation of all transport equipment within scope and troubleshoot issues on a real-time basis to provide the safest care for patients.
- Maintain all transport equipment in a state of readiness by checking all equipment at the beginning of each shift and prn.
- Participate in the ongoing evaluation of transport equipment needs and provide detailed feedback to ensure evaluation was completed in a comprehensive manner.
- Transport Team Communication Center
- Facilitate and coordinate initial transport request information from the referring facility unit clerk and begin request in Central Logic.
- Maintain appropriate contact with the transport team at required times to ensure team's whereabouts and ongoing safety of transport team.
- Keep updated information on current weather conditions in and around transport service areas and notify transport leadership of any current weather threats.
- Professional Development/Professional Accountability
- Participate in peer review of transport team members by accurately completing post-transport debriefs.
- Earn a minimum of 15 contact hours per year related to transport medicine and/or population served by transport program.
- Take a proactive approach in seeking out own learning needs and experiences to stay up to date and current based on departmental educational plan and requirements.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy or related field preferred.
- Current licensure as a Respiratory Therapist in the state of Illinois required.
- Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) required.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Respiratory Therapist in a pediatric or neonatal setting required.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks effectively required.
