Job Summary:

The Respiratory Therapist will provide comprehensive respiratory care to critically ill/injured patients in the mobile environment of air and ground transports. This role requires a strong understanding of clinical situations and the ability to demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and experience. The ideal candidate will be a recognized resource, leader, and problem solver, with a strong ability to function independently and work effectively in a team environment.

Responsibilities:

• Patient Care Activities: Obtain pertinent patient histories, perform physical examinations, formulate differential diagnoses, and implement plans of care in collaboration with the Transport RN and Transport Medical Control Physician (TMCP).
• Assuring Safety and Quality of Care: Wear appropriate uniforms, obtain transport consents, complete independent verification, and participate in the Quality and Safety plan of the department.
• Operation of Transport Equipment/Vehicle Procedures: Demonstrate expert knowledge and operation of all transport equipment, maintain equipment in a state of readiness, and report malfunctions/errors to biomedical engineering and transport leadership.
• Transport Team Communication Center: Coordinate initial transport request information, maintain contact with the transport team, and communicate ETA and status with referring and receiving facilities.
• Professional Development/Professional Accountability: Participate in peer review, earn continuing education credits, and take a proactive approach in seeking out own learning needs and experiences.

Requirements:

• Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) licensure in Illinois and willingness to obtain licenses in other states as directed by Transport Leadership.
• Current BLS and PALS certification or obtained and maintained within 6 months of hire/transfer.
• C-NPT (Certified Neonatal Pediatric Transport) certification preferred, must complete within 2 years of hire/transfer.
• At least 3 years of respiratory experience (or 4000 hours as equivalent) with a focus on Critical care (peds and/or neonatal preferred).
• RRT required, NPS required within 6 months of hire.

Working Conditions:

The Respiratory Therapist will work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with exposure to infectious, biological, and chemical agents. The role requires the ability to work in small, confined spaces, wear securement devices, and respond quickly to patient needs. The ideal candidate will be able to work weekends, holidays, and different shifts, and take call as directed by the leadership team.
