GENERAL OVERVIEW
As a vital member of the surgical team, the Surgical Support Specialist plays a crucial role in ensuring that surgical procedures are conducted safely and efficiently. This position requires adherence to strict aseptic protocols and the preparation of necessary surgical instruments and equipment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Verify the availability of supplies and equipment essential for surgical operations.
  • Prepare and maintain a sterile environment by scrubbing, gowning, and gloving appropriately.
  • Organize and set up the sterile table with required instruments, supplies, and medications.
  • Conduct instrument counts with the circulator prior to the procedure and before closing incisions.
  • Assist in gowning and gloving surgeons and other surgical assistants.
  • Support the draping of the sterile field to maintain cleanliness.
  • Efficiently pass instruments and materials to the surgeon during the operation.
  • Uphold the highest standards of sterile technique throughout the procedure.
  • Assist in closing wounds under the supervision of the surgeon.
  • Prepare sterile dressings post-operation.
  • Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization.
  • Collaborate with team members for the terminal cleaning of the operating room.
  • Assist in preparing the room for subsequent patients.
  • Safely transfer patients to the operating table and position them using appropriate equipment.
  • Secure dressings after closure of incisions.
  • Help transport patients to the recovery area.
  • Engage in Quality Assurance initiatives to enhance operational standards.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Completion of an accredited Surgical Scrub Technologist program.
  • Current certification through the NSAA or NBSTSA.
  • Valid certification as a BLS Healthcare Provider is mandatory.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in an operating room setting is preferred.
  • Possess critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks including frequent standing, bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling, and lifting patients or equipment up to 50 lbs.
