The Custodian will play a vital role in ensuring a clean and safe environment for both guests and staff. Responsibilities include maintaining the facilities' cleanliness, adhering to the Gardens' Community Agreements, and upholding IDEA principles.
This role involves working with minimal supervision, performing a variety of daily, event-related, and seasonal tasks. Opportunities are available for both year-round and seasonal positions. The Custodian will work full-time hours, with the possibility of overtime, and will participate in a rotating schedule to ensure coverage for 7-day/week operations, including after-hours events. Night and weekend shifts are required, though some scheduling flexibility may be offered.
Qualifications:
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to high-quality standards.
- Ability to foster effective working relationships with guests, colleagues, and supervisors.
- Experience working collaboratively in a team environment, recognizing and valuing team members' strengths and weaknesses.
- Familiarity with operating and maintaining cleaning tools such as vacuums, brooms, mops, and squeegees.
- Ability to comprehend and follow instructions regarding cleaning products.
- Flexibility to switch tasks quickly and respond positively to urgent situations.
- Capability to work safely from a ladder and perform physical tasks such as standing, walking, stooping, and reaching.
- Basic computer skills, including proficiency in reading, writing, and organizing information.
- Commitment to integrating IDEA principles into the Gardens' operations and visitor interactions.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Thoroughly clean, sanitize, and restock restrooms according to established protocols.
- Dust and wipe furniture; sweep, mop, or vacuum floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets; empty and clean wastebaskets and trash containers; wash accessible interior and exterior windows; clean blinds; wash walls and equipment; collect recycling materials.
- Launder cleaning rags and dust mops.
- Assist in setting up facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences, and events.
- Maintain communication with Facilities and other internal teams.
- Help manage organization and inventory control systems.
Building Security:
Lock and unlock assigned buildings, ensuring security when facilities are not in use. This includes checking for unlocked doors and windows, reporting unauthorized occupants, and turning off lights.
Seasonal Duties:
Perform seasonal cleaning tasks, such as removing snow or debris from sidewalks and stairs using hand-operated tools or small power equipment. Respond to emergencies or unforeseen circumstances as needed, including event setup and weather-related cleanup. Participate in Gardens-wide initiatives, including special assignments.
Physical Requirements:
This position involves both indoor and outdoor work in various climatic conditions. The employee must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and carry up to 25 lbs, typically over short distances such as one flight of stairs or to an outdoor venue. Frequent standing, walking, and repetitive motion tasks (sweeping, mopping, dusting) are required.
