Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Civil Engineer to join our team at Bexar County, TX. As a key member of our Public Works department, you will be responsible for supervising professional and technical employees in the development, design, construction, and maintenance of public works projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare technical reports and reviews comments regarding engineering studies, construction plans, and specifications.
  • Conduct field investigations to evaluate engineering problems and recommend solutions.
  • Review plans, studies, reports, and permits for compliance with the appropriate code and engineering design standards.
  • Coordinate development of project designs with contractors, utility companies, land owners, developers, governmental agencies, and the general public.
  • Provide information regarding drainage/flood plain issues, roadway plans, traffic studies/warrants, and subdivision platting to County personnel and the general public.
  • Evaluate traffic signals, traffic detection systems, street lighting, school flashers, traffic signs, pavement markings, traffic data collection, and traffic safety through communication/interaction with various entities.
  • Supervise traffic program and project development for all traffic modes, neighborhood/arterial traffic operations, high collision analysis, traffic operations, investigation, and implementation activities, and traffic project design delivery.
  • Recommend and monitor contractors/consultants assigned to installation/maintenance of traffic signals, traffic video systems, street lighting, school flashers, traffic signs, pavement markings, and traffic data collection.
  • May require the need to respond to emergency situations, such as traffic signal malfunctions, traffic video system malfunctions, street lighting malfunctions, school flasher malfunctions, traffic sign repairs and maintenance, pavement marking removal and installation after hours/weekends.
Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or closely related engineering discipline, and four (4) years' practical engineering experience including two (2) years' civil engineering experience.
  • Must be a Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Texas or obtain within the first six months of employment.
  • Must have a valid Class C Texas driver's license.
  • Considerable knowledge of civil engineering practices and procedures involving traffic, roadway, and bridge plan design and/or flood plain management.
  • Skill in managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to supervise technical and skilled employees; ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; ability to operate personal computer, peripherals, cellular phone, and basic office equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, County employees, Elected/Appointed Officials, outside agencies, the news media, and the public.
  • Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance.
  • Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test.
  • May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek.
