Job Overview

The City of Avondale is inviting applications for the role of Correctional Facility Officer. This is a full-time position, classified as FLSA non-exempt, and includes benefits such as the Arizona Correction Officers Retirement Plan.

Qualified certified correctional officers will be considered for this role if they have successfully completed either the Arizona Correctional Officer Academy or training from any county Sheriff's Office academy.

In this position, you will be responsible for the care, custody, and management of inmates at the Avondale City Jail. You will provide essential support functions for the Avondale Police Patrol Division and Tolleson Police Patrol Division, including the transport of arrested individuals to the designated jail facilities. Your duties will include ensuring the completion of all necessary bookings and processes for newly arrested individuals, maintaining proper accountability of supplies for both staff and inmates, and ensuring a clean and safe environment within the facility. You will conduct regular counts of the inmate population, perform fire and safety inspections, and oversee the appropriate release of inmates. Additionally, you will supervise visitation and communicate with victims regarding inmate releases, warrant pick-ups, and the services of Orders of Protection and Injunctions Against Harassment. You may also assist patrol units with the transport of prisoners as needed.

Key Responsibilities

1. Assist the public with inquiries regarding the status of housed inmates and direct callers to the appropriate agencies.

2. Maintain daily logs of shift activities and create arrest files for all individuals processed through the Avondale Police Department.

3. Process inmates by completing necessary paperwork, conducting searches, fingerprinting, interviewing for medical conditions, confiscating personal property, and taking photographs.

4. Ensure the care, custody, and control of the facility and its inmates by distributing meals, managing inmate movements, overseeing releases, and responding to medical emergencies.

5. Facilitate timely court appearances for all inmates by escorting them to court, preparing bond receipts, and managing bond collections.

6. Maintain the operational vehicle by overseeing routine maintenance and fueling.

7. Manage food procurement and meal preparation for inmates, including shopping, storing, and dispensing meals on weekends and holidays.

8. Attend required departmental meetings and training sessions.

Minimum Qualifications

1. High School Diploma or GED equivalency is required.

2. Successful completion of an accredited Police Academy, Corrections Academy, or Detention Academy is required.

3. A minimum of two (2) years of experience as a Detention Officer, Corrections Officer, or Police Officer.

4. Valid Arizona Operator's Driver's License is necessary.

Supplemental Information

This role requires the ability to read and interpret court documents, city and state criminal codes, OSHA regulations, and police reports. You will need to perform basic mathematical calculations and possess strong writing skills for reports and daily activity logs. Planning responsibilities include organizing work details for inmates and managing supply orders. Strong organizational and time management skills are essential for effective prisoner management and court operations. You may also be tasked with preparing documents and conducting research for budget recommendations. This position requires professional judgment to make decisions within established practices and procedures. You will interact with various departments within the City and may engage with external agencies. Regular attendance and the ability to maintain a constant state of alertness and safety are essential.
