Key Responsibilities
  • Clean and maintain building floors, stairways, and other areas to ensure a safe and healthy environment for employees and visitors.
  • Empty trash and recyclables, and replace liners as needed.
  • Clean and service restrooms, including mopping, disinfecting, and replenishing supplies.
  • Monitor building security and safety by performing tasks such as locking doors, turning off lights, and checking electrical appliance use.
  • Steam-clean or shampoo carpets, and use cleaning solutions to remove stains and clean surfaces.
  • Clean windows, glass partitions, and mirrors, using soapy water or other cleaners, sponges, and squeegees.
  • Clean and polish furniture and fixtures, and scrub surfaces as needed.
  • Wash walls, ceilings, woodwork, windows, mirrors, and fixtures using step and extension ladders.
  • Dust furniture, desks, walls, machines, and equipment.
  • Apply wax to coat canteen and hallway floors, and buff.
  • Strip, seal, finish, and polish floors.
  • Perform outside grounds maintenance as requested.
  • Move heavy furniture, equipment, and supplies, either manually or by using hand trucks.
  • Identify and report possible repairs.
  • Make adjustments and minor repairs to heating, cooling, ventilating, plumbing, and electrical systems.
  • Shovel snow from sidewalks and sprinkle salt on surface.
  • Clean and restore building interiors damaged by fire, smoke, or water, using commercial cleaning equipment.
  • Notify managers concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems.
  • Maintain an inventory of cleaning and toiletry supplies, and requisition supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Set up, arrange, and remove decorations, tables, chairs, ladders, and scaffolding to prepare facilities for events.
  • Clean grounds and parking lots of litter, glass, or other debris.
  • Replace light bulbs and fuses as appropriate.
  • Clean sinks, countertops, microwaves, and refrigerators in break rooms.
  • Handle recycling materials.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • One year of experience in the care and cleaning of buildings, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of standard methods, practices, tools, and equipment of the janitorial service profession.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety rules.
  • Knowledge of the proper use of chemicals, fertilizers, and pesticides.
