Program Overview:

SHIM's Early Childhood Program (ECP) aims to empower nonnative English-speaking preschoolers with the academic skills and social confidence necessary to navigate educational challenges and reduce the achievement gap as they embark on their academic journeys. The program operates throughout the academic year, providing enriching experiences that integrate English as a Second Language and social-emotional learning within the Pennsylvania Learning Standards.

Position Summary:

The ECP Aide is a part-time, year-round role responsible for supporting the Early Childhood Program in daily operations while promoting the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development of children aged 3 to 5 years. This position requires collaboration with program staff and volunteers to create a safe and nurturing educational environment for all participants. The ECP Aide is expected to be present during designated hours to facilitate program activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Lead Teacher and Assistant Teacher in preparing engaging weekly lessons.
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and stimulating classroom environment.
  • Participate in arrival and dismissal procedures to ensure smooth transitions.
  • Build positive relationships with students and their families.
  • Engage in play and activities that promote physical development and communication skills.
  • Supervise activities to ensure safety and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Collaborate effectively with the ECP Lead, Assistant Teacher, and volunteers.
  • Attend staff meetings and participate in professional development training.
  • Support and implement the preschool teaching philosophy of 'learning through play.'
  • Provide appropriate guidance and correction of student behavior as necessary.
  • Assist in the ongoing evaluation and monitoring of each child's growth and development.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to maintain a positive and calm demeanor under pressure.
  • Experience working with children, youth, or in community development settings.
  • Awareness and sensitivity to the needs of a multicultural community.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated initiative, creativity, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and remain flexible.
  • Familiarity with early learning standards is preferred.
  • Experience with English language learners is a plus.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma is required.
  • An Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education, Education, or Special Education is preferred.
  • Relevant experience or education in youth development, education, social-emotional support, or program management will be considered.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to actively engage in play and activities with students.

Clearance Requirements:

  • Must obtain necessary clearances and complete mandated reporter training.
