Job Summary

The Pharmacy Technician Specialist works under supervision to fill prescriptions, pack, and ship products, and performs other job-related services in the pharmacy.

Responsibilities include prior authorizations, timely refill calls to patients, and ensuring necessary communications are provided to customers.

Experience and Education

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • PHARM INT Registration with Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP) as a Registered Technician or Pharmacist Intern
  • BLS Certification with course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC)

Preferred:

  • 1 year of experience as a retail pharmacy technician or equivalent
  • Specialty pharmacy experience
  • PTCB-CPHT Certification with Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)
Job Duties

The Pharmacy Technician Specialist assists the pharmacist in reviewing, processing, preparing, filling, labeling, and dispensing medications and supplies as allowable by law.

Responsibilities include answering telephones, ensuring necessary communications are provided to customers, and arranging customer consultations with the pharmacist.

The specialist also cleans equipment, maintains temperature logs, and checks medication and administration supply inventory for out-of-date products.

Additional duties include processing incoming orders, checking items for shelf life, affixing price stickers, and assisting with full inventory and cycle counts.

The specialist also loads insurance plans to patient profiles, runs test claims, and makes outreach to health plans and/or pharmacy benefit managers to resolve rejected claims.

Responsibilities also include assisting nurses with prior-authorization processes, placing outbound calls to patients or physicians' offices, and recording and processing orders and/or inquiries received by fax, mail, telephone, and/or through patient direct contact.

The specialist provides timely responses to patients' inquiries by telephone and/or email, consistent with service and quality standards.

Responsibilities also include receiving inbound and outbound calls to patients or MD offices, coordinating patient care, and ensuring good patient relations are maintained.

The specialist also contacts pharmacists to alert them of changes in patient conditions, compliance issues, or side effects, and completes all additional special handling duties as assigned.

Additional responsibilities include documenting information received from calls and providing notification of any urgent orders, shipping-related issues, and any errors, complaints, or compliments to the appropriate party or system.
