Position Overview:

The Urology Nurse Practitioner plays a vital role in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients with urological conditions. This position emphasizes health promotion and disease prevention, ensuring comprehensive medical care is provided to individuals across various demographics. The Nurse Practitioner is accountable for fulfilling all assigned responsibilities effectively.

Key Qualifications:

  • Educational Background:
    • Completion of a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and certification from the National Commission on Certification of Nurse Practitioners is mandatory.
  • Professional Experience:
    • Experience in urology is preferred but not essential.
  • Licensure and Certification Requirements:
    • A valid license from the New Mexico Board of Medical Examiners is required.
    • Current certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), etc., must be maintained (if not current upon hiring, these must be obtained within three months).

Core Competencies and Performance Standards:

  • Proficient understanding of urological issues such as recurrent urinary tract infections, benign prostatic hyperplasia, elevated prostate-specific antigen levels, overactive bladder, and urological malignancies.
  • Conducts patient evaluations in an outpatient environment, which includes thorough assessments, history taking, ordering diagnostic tests, developing differential diagnoses, creating care plans, prescribing medications, and suggesting follow-up care.
  • Executes general urological procedures, including catheterization, urodynamic studies, and management of pessaries.
  • Collaborates with urologists for patient management, surgical scheduling, addressing complex cases, and providing guidance on treatment alternatives.
  • Assists in pre-operative evaluations, patient education, and post-operative follow-ups.
  • Reviews and interprets lab results, responds to critical findings promptly, and communicates necessary information to patients and healthcare providers.
  • Accurately documents all patient interactions, treatments provided, and follow-up plans in medical records.
  • Records all services rendered for billing purposes, including diagnostic tests, procedures, and medications administered.
  • Maintains all necessary licenses and certifications, ensuring timely updates to Human Resources.
  • Adheres to the mission, vision, and core values of RMCHCS, complying with all relevant policies and procedures.
