Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Electronics Technician to join our team at the University of Hawai'i/Infrared Telescope (UH/IRT). The successful candidate will provide technical support for the daily operations of the UKIRT at the summit of Mauna Kea, Hawai'i.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform on-site troubleshooting and repair of equipment
  • Operate the telescope and scientific instruments for diagnostic and maintenance purposes
  • Operate specialized forklift and mobile elevating work platform
  • Work on instrument exchanges, telescope top-end changes, and primary mirror recoating
  • Drive project vehicles to access facility at the summit
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment
  • Document new work procedures and equipment
  • Work and update with technical documentation maintained in a computerized database
  • Determine needs and initiate purchases as needed
  • Manage inventory of parts and equipment
  • Advise other staff on aspects of repair and maintenance
Requirements
  • Vocational School Degree or Certification in electronics fabrication, maintenance, and repair
  • Three to five (3-5) years of experience in construction, modification, and maintenance of electronics systems
  • Considerable working knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques in the use of diagnostic equipment and repair tools
  • Ability to operate specialized forklift and mobile elevating work platform
  • Ability to understand and follow blueprints, sketches, technical documentation, oral and written instructions
  • Ability to plan complex work procedures
  • Able to use tools in an appropriate manner on complex repair work
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve complex electronics problems to determine the cause and to plan the resolution of the problem in an effective, innovative, and timely manner
  • Ability to present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally, and by preparation of reports and other documents
  • Ability to operate a personal computer, word processing software, email, and video conferencing software
Working Conditions

The successful candidate must be able to work at 14,000 feet elevation and pass a post-offer high-altitude medical examination. Must be able to lift and carry at least sixty (60) pounds unassisted, climb ladders, work in an enclosed space, and height up to fifty (50) feet.
