Computational Seismology Postdoctoral Researcher

We are seeking a highly skilled postdoctoral researcher to join our team at the University of Texas at Austin. The successful candidate will work on computational modeling of geophysical processes and analysis of geophysical data to improve existing and develop new approaches for earthquake source characterization.
Responsibilities:- Conduct research to develop novel computational approaches on earthquake source characterization using full waveform inversion or combination of similar inversion methodologies.
- Minimize earthquake source location uncertainty using existing methods, estimate source intensity and directionality characteristics, and develop new methods that may require the joint estimation of additional subsurface geophysical parameters.
- Compare the effectiveness of different methods in earthquake source characterization, considering heterogeneous and isotropic/anisotropic earth models, and various subsurface conditions.
- Integrate results into TexNet's operational process for earthquake location and a regional time-dependent seismic hazard model estimating approaches for risk mitigation.
- Present research findings in meetings and conferences, and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
- PhD in computational engineering, seismology, or geophysics, with prior research experience in geophysical/geomechanical modeling, hypothesis testing, earthquake catalogs, and stress evolution processes.
- Excellent knowledge and experience in software development, including parallel programming.
- PhD must have been received within 3 years from the date of hire.
- Knowledge of subsurface modeling, earthquake nucleation processes, fault rupture propagation, and seismic hazard modeling.
- May work in standard office conditions.
- Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation.
- Occasional weekend, overtime, and evening work to meet deadlines.
