Austin, Texas, United States University of Texas at Austin Full time
Job Title: Computational Seismology Postdoctoral Fellow

This position is located at the J.J. Pickle Research Campus in North Austin.

Purpose and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will conduct research to develop novel computational approaches on earthquake source characterization using full waveform inversion or combination of similar inversion methodologies.

The goal is to minimize earthquake source location uncertainty using existing methods, estimate source intensity and directionality characteristics, and develop new methods that may require the joint estimation of additional subsurface geophysical parameters.

The results could be integrated in TexNet's operational process for earthquake location and a regional time-dependent seismic hazard model estimating approaches for risk mitigation.

The candidate will also present in meetings and conferences, publish in peer-review journals, and participate in the development of new methods and approaches.

Required Qualifications
  • PhD in computational engineering, seismology, or geophysics
  • Prior research experience with geophysical/geomechanical modeling, hypothesis testing, earthquake catalogs, and stress evolution processes
  • Excellent knowledge/experience in software development, including parallel programming
  • PhD must have been received within 3 years from date of hire
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of subsurface modeling, earthquake nucleation processes, fault rupture propagation, and seismic hazard modeling
Working Conditions
  • May work around standard office conditions
  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation
  • Occasional weekend, overtime, and evening work to meet deadlines
  • Occasional travel intrastate, interstate, international
Required Materials
  • Resume/CV
  • 3 work references with their contact information
  • Letter of interest

Please ensure that all required materials have been uploaded before submitting your online job application.
