Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Health Technician to join our team at the Dayton, Ohio VAMC. As an Ophthalmology Technician, you will play a critical role in supporting Ophthalmologists and Optometrists in providing high-quality patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Obtain and record vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, and glucose levels.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities, such as staff meetings and mandatory educational in-services.
  • Obtain accurate medical and ophthalmic histories, and measure and record visual acuity.
  • Administer anesthetic eye drops and perform basic tonometry.
  • Estimate anterior chamber depth and record spectacle readings through automated lensometry.
  • Triage patient phone calls and ensure exam rooms are stocked with adequate supplies.
  • Provide patient education on eye care and post-operative instructions.
  • Accurately measure, compare, and evaluate pupillary responses.
  • Administer eye drops to dilate pupils and perform basic color vision screening.
  • Check and calibrate technical ophthalmology screening instruments.
Requirements
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.
  • One year of experience in a health care field, such as nursing, medical assisting, or health technician.
  • Certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) with the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and provide excellent patient care.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Working Conditions

This is a full-time position, Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm. Telework is not available for this position. The selected candidate will be required to serve a probationary period and pass a pre-employment physical examination.

Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program and the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination program is a requirement for all Veterans Health Administration Health Care Personnel (HCP).
