Welcome to the Indian River County Board of County Commissioners.

Position Overview:

The Building Plans Reviewer is responsible for evaluating architectural plans and related documentation to ensure adherence to the Florida Building Code. This role requires a high level of technical expertise and the ability to work autonomously under the general supervision of the Building Official.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assess knowledge of contemporary construction techniques, methodologies, and materials.
  • Interpret two-dimensional schematics in relation to three-dimensional structures.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of building regulations.
  • Possess foundational knowledge of soil and foundation evaluations.
  • Deliver clear written communication regarding plan discrepancies.
  • Engage in effective verbal communication with the public and collaborate with colleagues, including Support Staff, Plans Examiners, and the Building Official.
Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

A high school diploma or GED, supplemented by a minimum of five years of documented experience in construction (Journeyman level or equivalent), inspection, and plans examination, or an associate degree in engineering, building technology, or a related field. A contractor's license may be considered to fulfill some experience requirements.

Licenses and Certifications:
  • Must meet the qualifications set by the Department of Business and Professional Regulations (DBPR) for Provisional Plans Examination Certification.
  • Must obtain the necessary DBPR Standard Plans Examination Certification within one year.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

In-depth knowledge of county, state, and federal building codes, along with the ability to interpret these codes.

Ability to communicate code deficiencies tactfully to contractors, builders, and property owners.

Proficient in reading and understanding construction documents to verify compliance with required codes and standards.

Familiarity with various computer applications and strong typing/keyboard skills.
