Position Summary
The Safety/Training Technician role is an hourly indirect labor position responsible for facilitating training, providing supportive coaching, and coordinating the reporting of safety functions and task-oriented training at the site. This role involves assisting personnel in recognizing and rectifying hazards, establishing optimal safety practices, and delivering training and coaching to employees. The Safety Technician will oversee daily safety and environmental obligations associated with each crew, supported by regional managers, operational leaders, and EHS managers/directors to foster career growth in Environmental Health and Safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Area Safety Manager to ensure all Environmental, Health, and Safety programs are current and that a management system is in place to monitor implementation.
- Lead and promote the effectiveness of the Safety Action Team (Safety Committee) at the facility, ensuring activities are monitored and documented.
- Assist in organizing and participating in morning safety huddles; record employee safety suggestions and concerns.
- Manage the site’s (CMS) program, ensuring timely completion of required tasks.
- Maintain a calendar of (HSMS) required tasks and support employees in their assignments, aligning with program requirements.
- Attend and contribute to Monthly Safety Meetings, providing program references and guidance.
- Plan, coordinate, and monitor all R3 exercises, ensuring action items are completed and documented.
- Plan, coordinate, and track all (5S) Projects, documenting outcomes and ensuring sustainability.
- Collect and report all Near Miss/Potential Hazard (NM/PH) cards submitted, maintaining an action item list with regular follow-ups.
- Ensure the availability and compliance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) with corporate/site programs.
- Coach employees on behavioral concerns or observations made in the field using Positive Behavior Observations (PBOs).
- Continuously monitor housekeeping and 5S sustainability, providing supportive coaching to employees.
- Administer onboarding training for new hires, including classroom instruction and competency testing in the field.
- Coordinate with the Area Safety Manager to ensure all (EMS) tasks are completed and updated to reflect compliance.
- Oversee the inspection process for Powered Industrial Vehicles to ensure compliance with routine and frequency requirements.
- Participate in necessary Train the Trainer courses for areas such as crane/rigging, powered industrial vehicles, walking working surfaces, and First Aid/CPR/AED.
- Manage and complete required environmental monitoring or sampling as defined by permits or programs.
- Develop operational task-based training standards using key employees as a knowledge base.
- Coordinate or deliver task-based training to employees.
- Maintain a Training Matrix for the facility.
Qualifications
To excel in this role, candidates must demonstrate the ability to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The following qualifications are essential:
- A degree in an occupational safety-related field is highly preferred, though a combination of formal education and relevant work experience in safety management or supervisory roles will also be considered.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in the EHS field or at least 1 year of credible internship or co-op experience in the EHS domain.
- In-depth knowledge of OSHA CFR 1910 regulations.
- High proficiency in MS Office applications.
- Detail-oriented with exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including presentation abilities.
- Capability to collaborate with personnel across various levels to achieve plant and corporate objectives.
- Willingness to undertake occasional overnight travel as required.
