Job Description

We are seeking a skilled Family Support Specialist to join our team at the Family Support Organization of Essex County. As a Family Support Specialist, you will play a vital role in providing face-to-face peer support, education, and advocacy to parents and caregivers of children involved in the New Jersey Children's System of Care.

The ideal candidate will be a primary caregiver or parent of a child with emotional, behavioral, mental health, substance use, intellectual, and developmental challenges who has successfully navigated a child-serving system on behalf of the child.

Responsibilities:
  • Build Relationships: Establish and maintain supportive relationships with caregivers assigned by referral through the Children's System of Care.
  • Conduct Assessments: Perform regular family assessments to identify strengths and needs, and create plans of action with caregivers to address their identified needs.
  • Educate and Empower: Educate caregivers on the roles of members of the Child Family Team within the Children's System of Care, and assist them in building a team that includes natural supports.
  • Advocate for Families: Assist and encourage families in expressing their needs at meetings, such as Child Family Team meetings, court hearings, and Child Study Team meetings.
  • Document Encounters: Document each caregiver encounter in the agency's defined system of record.
