Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Quality Microbiologist to join our team at Refresco. As a Quality Microbiologist, you will be responsible for ensuring the quality and safety of our products by conducting microbiological tests and analyzing results.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct microbiological tests, including yeast, mold, TPC, coliform, lactobacillus, and microbial identification of bulk, raw materials, raw water, treated water, and finished product.
  • Perform microbiological sampling, plating, and data interpretation of water, product, ingredients, and processes.
  • Determine and perform tests needed for analysis and reporting.
  • Execute microbiological environmental tests, including yeast, mold, TPC, and lactobacillus.
  • Execute daily and weekly quality tests on raw and treated water.
  • Review and data entry for testing results into electronic data management systems.
  • Record tests and analyses and report results.
  • Perform laboratory investigations for out-of-specification and out-of-trend results.
  • Write change controls and work orders for systems and instrumentation changes.
  • Creation/revision of SOPs and other documents required to support testing and ensure compliance.
  • Participate in non-routine projects, validations, and method development to meet departmental and individual goals.
  • Obtain HACCP and PCQI certification.
  • Obtain ASO license.
Additional Duties
  • Receiving, labeling, and safely storing samples to be tested.
  • Discussing and answering questions regarding results.
  • Organizing and storing samples in accordance with all safety and other requirements to ensure the safety of personnel and integrity of the sample.
  • Cleaning and maintaining lab equipment, including recalibration of equipment.
  • Maintaining equipment records and daily work logs.
  • Staying current on technical and scientific advances in the field.
  • Advising QA Manager of microbiological results.
  • Ordering supplies for Micro Lab, Sanitation, and QC Lab when needed.
  • Providing administrative assistance for Quality Department.
  • May be assigned special projects.
  • Creating new microbiology-related procedures/SOPs as needed, updating/revising existing ones as needed.
Essential Functions
  • Providing flexible work hours to support team initiatives.
  • Knowledge of analytical techniques, chemistry, microbiology, math, basic computer skills.
  • Ability to make calculations and recommendations based on testing results.
  • Ability to enter data in lab-based database and SAP computer database.
  • Understanding common microbiological test instrumentation.
  • Cleaning, routine maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of laboratory test equipment and procedures.
  • Preparation of standard solutions for microbiological and wet chemistry methods.
  • Preparation of analytical data in a complete, precise, and professional manner.
  • Maintaining the lab in a clean state at all times.
  • To follow up on problem areas and to assist to final resolution – working with Quality group and Operations in a team spirit.
  • Technical understanding of shelf-stable CSDs and Carbonated Juices, Seltzers, and Cocktails and the application of Good Manufacturing Practices, cleaning procedures, and safe handling of chemicals.
  • Experience with the execution of test methods for shelf-stable CSDs and Carbonated Juices, Seltzers, Cocktails, raw materials.
  • Monitoring process parameters and reporting issues to Supervisors and Managers.
  • The ability to communicate with all personnel in the plant in a professional manner.
  • Ability to train others in technical procedures.

  • Previous success in a laboratory environment (work or school).
  • Ability to follow instructions, review manuals, and complete required documentation.
  • Strong analytical, organizational skills, and ability to exercise good judgment.
  • Good verbal and written communications skills (will have some client interaction).
  • A satisfactory work, safety, and attendance record.
  • Critical thinker, ability to identify issues and work quickly to bring resolution.
  • Capable of managing/coordinating multiple priorities in a dynamic environment, while maintaining a professional demeanor and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and scheduling skills.
  • Must have good computer skills both in typing and Microsoft Office.
  • Must have good attention to detail.
  • Must have an understanding of client confidentiality.
  • Must have the ability to lift 35 pounds.
  • Must be able to work in various temperatures and conditions.
  • Must be able to walk, bend, stoop, and sit for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to work independently and with a team.
  • Ability to work without supervision.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Food Science, or related discipline preferred.
  • Laboratory Science Technician Program or related discipline preferred.
  • Minimum two years lab experience preferred.
Working Conditions
  • Physical: Continuously standing or walking.
  • Visual/Sensory: This position requires regular need to give moderate attention with one or two senses at a time.
  • Work environment: Work and environment are very repetitive.
  • Mental Stress: There is pronounced pressure from deadlines, production quotas, accuracy, or similar demands.
