Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Special Education Teacher to join our team at Manhattan Star Academy. As a Special Education Teacher, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality educational services to students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Classroom Management: Oversee a classroom of school-aged children with brain-based disabilities and/or intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).
  • Lesson Planning and Instruction: Prepare and teach lessons, providing instructional and behavioral management support to students, both individually and in small groups.
  • Social Skills Development: Incorporate social skills into daily lesson plans and activities.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate with students' school therapy teams as necessary and implement therapy recommendations to support optimal treatment of the student.
  • Progress Monitoring and Reporting: Prepare and document annual academic goals for students and compile quarterly progress reports; participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) process, including IEP meetings and team meetings.
  • Parent Communication: Communicate and collaborate with parents on a regular basis and involve parents in their child's activities and progress.
  • Supervision and Support: Provide direction, support, and supervision to paraprofessionals, teacher assistants, and/or Associate Special Education Teachers in their classroom.
  • Instructional Design: Utilize a multisensory approach incorporating art, music, and technology to design lessons to increase students' literacy, numeracy, communication, social, and life skills.
Requirements
  • Certification and Registration: Current certification and registration as a Teacher of Students with Disabilities (grades B-2, 1-6, 7-12, and/or All Grades) or Permanent Special Education Certification, issued by the New York State Education Department.
  • Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in education or a closely related field and active pursuit of a master's level education in a New York State Registered Program for Special Education Teachers Certificate (or equivalent), with anticipated completion and receipt of certification as a Teacher of Students with Disabilities within 5 years of appointment; and 2 years of experience in childcare, social services, healthcare, and/or other school-based roles.
  • Interpersonal and Communication Skills: Exceptional interpersonal, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Initiative and Flexibility: Ability to take initiative, multi-task, and meet deadlines.
  • Personality Type: Highly flexible personality type.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters Degree: Masters degree in special education strongly preferred.
  • Current Certification: Current NYS certification and registration as a teacher in special education (Students with Disabilities, Permanent in Special Education, etc.).
  • Previous Experience: Previous experience with school-aged children with special needs.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Salary: $60,000 to $70,000 per year.
