Job Overview

The CDL B Truck Operator is accountable to the Facilities & Operations Supervisor, Dispatcher, or Terminal Operations Supervisor. This role involves operating a truck or tractor-trailer combination with a weight capacity of less than 26,001 pounds to transport and deliver materials and equipment to various locations, ensuring compliance with company Health, Safety, and Environmental standards as well as all relevant DOT regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely transport freight and materials to and from production areas, loading docks, and delivery vehicles.
  • Accurately maneuver trucks into loading or unloading positions, following signals from the loading crew.
  • Secure materials for transport using appropriate methods such as ropes, blocks, chains, or covers.
  • Receive and follow instructions from dispatch for delivery or receipt of materials.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicles to ensure safety and mechanical integrity.
  • Maintain accurate logs of working hours, vehicle service, and repair status in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Obtain necessary receipts or signatures for delivered materials, ensuring documentation is complete and accurate.
  • Assist in various yard operations as needed.

Equipment & Maintenance

  • Transport necessary tools and supplies and ensure their return after use.
  • Report any vehicle defects, accidents, or traffic violations to the appropriate supervisor.

Internal Control Responsibilities

Support the company's internal control processes by understanding, communicating, and complying with established policies and procedures.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not involve supervisory duties.

Interpersonal Contacts

Regular interaction with the Facilities & Operations Supervisor, Dispatcher, Terminal Operations Supervisor, and production employees is required.

Job Conditions

This role is subject to various weather conditions and physical hazards typical of a scrap yard environment. Appropriate personal protective equipment must be worn at all times.

Physical Requirements

The CDL B Truck Operator must be able to:

  • Sit for extended periods.
  • Stand and walk frequently on uneven surfaces.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds consistently.
  • Perform manual dexterity tasks, including handling controls and equipment.
  • Communicate effectively through speech and hearing.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED preferred.
  • Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License.
  • Valid medical certification.
  • Three years of verifiable Class B driving experience within the last five years.
  • No more than two moving violations in the last three years.
  • No more than one preventable accident in the last three years.
