Position Overview

The School Counselor plays a pivotal role in aligning with the mission and values of the Martha O'Bryan Center. This position is dedicated to delivering a thorough counseling program that is both anticipatory and reactive. Collaborating closely with the Director of Culture and Behavior Interventionists, the School Counselor provides individualized, small group, and large group counseling services to students facing trauma and academic challenges.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Foster a positive and supportive school culture that encourages joy, self-discipline, and core values.
  • In partnership with the Director of Culture, design and implement a data-informed, comprehensive counseling program that addresses barriers to learning and works to close achievement gaps.
  • Provide extensive counseling services and interventions essential for the social and emotional development of all students, in both group and individual settings.
  • Manage crisis situations using various de-escalation and intervention techniques.
  • Consult with educators and families to support the social and emotional needs of students.
  • Collaborate with external social service professionals to identify suitable agency services for students and their families.
  • Develop and assist in executing intervention plans for students, which may include crisis intervention and safety strategies.
  • Support the high school placement process through individual conferences with students and families.
  • Perform other school-related duties as assigned, including supervision during arrival, dismissal, lunch, and recess.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A demonstrated passion for the mission of the Martha O'Bryan Center, coupled with a strong work ethic and a belief in the potential for all students, including those with special needs, to achieve academic success.
  • A Master's Degree in Psychology or Social Work; LPC or LCSW credentials are preferred.
  • Experience in providing social-emotional support to children and families.
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain supportive community partnerships.
  • Strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Familiarity with the operations of educational institutions or related non-profit organizations.
  • Possess the energy and determination to ensure student success.
  • Exhibit maturity, humility, a sense of humor, and a genuine love for students, staff, and families.
  • Commitment to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and equitable community.
