Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and organized Student Success Specialist to join our team at South Texas College. The successful candidate will provide academic advisement, transfer, referrals, and information regarding academic standards to students. This role will oversee, coordinate, and advise on the Math, Science, Information Technology, and Bachelor Programs associated with student success within a major.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide advisement, degree planning, and case management for students in the Math, Science, and Bachelor Programs.
  • Track and monitor students' progress through case management, including meeting with students monthly to monitor and ensure success.
  • Register students in prospective classes.
  • Generate reports for administration, as needed.
  • Assist students in the Math, Science, Information Technology, and Bachelor Programs with financial aid programs, college admission requirements, and transfer university advisement.
  • Plan and coordinate orientation for students in the Math, Science, Information Technology, and Bachelor Programs.
  • Assist with recruitment for programs through presentations and correspondence with local area high schools.
  • Review applicants for eligibility and acceptance.
  • Draft and send compliance letters each semester for students in the Math, Science, Information Technology, and Bachelor Programs.
  • Assist with course requests and registration.
  • Coordinate with Chairs and faculty to process paperwork for courses.
  • Assist with orientation, recruiting events, and other events.
  • Assist with degree plans and appeals.
  • Serve as Campus Security Authority.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • At least two (2) years of experience in advising, registration, financial aid, counseling, or student services in a higher education institution, preferred.
  • Experience in case management, preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Excellent oral, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, the Windows environment, and internet research skills.
  • Familiarity with college entrance test (TSI).
  • Familiarity with college transition and admission processes.
  • Familiarity with degree plans, courses, and curriculum.
  • Knowledge of specific needs for Special Populations.
  • Knowledgeable in Degree Works and/or other online advisement tools.
  • Maintains familiarity with the College's programs, policies, procedures, and academic standards.
  • Bilingual, English/Spanish, preferred.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and complete multiple tasks with attention to detail, within stated deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently as well as a team player within department and with others.
  • Ability to adapt to constant change and periods of fast-paced, high-intensity work situations.
  • Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as needed; willing to travel throughout the college district using own means of reliable transportation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to achieving the vision and mission of South Texas College.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret higher education degree plans.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, faculty, staff, and the general public.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Security Sensitive Position

This position requires a criminal background check under South Texas College policy.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Working Environment

This position requires the ability to work in a fast-paced, high-intensity work environment and to adapt to constant change.
