Job Summary


Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) are equipped with the essential knowledge and skills to stabilize and safely transport patients/residents, addressing both routine medical transfers and critical emergencies.

EMTs perform necessary interventions using standard equipment typically found in ambulances.

In an ambulance context, the EMT operates a mobile intensive care unit, following directions from emergency medical dispatchers.

Respond to emergency situations, providing first aid or life support to individuals who are sick or injured in pre-hospital environments.

Gather the medical history and vital statistics of patients/residents.

Assess the nature and severity of illness or injury to prioritize emergency needs and treatment procedures during transport.

Utilize essential medical equipment to treat patients/residents and evaluate the extent of their injuries or illnesses.

Communicate effectively with dispatchers or treatment center personnel to relay information about the situation, arrange patient/resident transfers, and report vital information to medical staff promptly and accurately.

Ensure the ambulance is maintained in a clean and orderly condition.

After each call, restock and replace used linens, blankets, and other supplies, clean all equipment following proper disinfecting protocols, and check all equipment to ensure the ambulance is ready for subsequent runs.


Physical activities include considerable use of arms and legs, as well as overall body movement, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials.


Successfully complete a state-approved Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course that meets or exceeds national educational standards.

Participate in ongoing education and training to maintain current certifications and/or licensure. Stay informed about new developments in the field or enhance existing knowledge.


In a hospital environment, EMTs, under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), assist in delivering patient/resident care services and support activities within the care unit.

Demonstrate an understanding of the Emergency Department workflow and anticipate operational needs. Be multi-skilled to provide enhanced bedside services.

Knowledge of and adherence to appropriate age-related patient/resident care protocols that address the physical and psychological needs of all age groups.

Engage with patients/residents to build rapport and provide emotional support. Ability to work with the growth and development needs of a diverse population.

Observe, record, and report to physicians the vital signs of patients/residents, measure input and output; collect non-invasive specimens; perform simple diagnostic tests, and obtain urine specimens while documenting all data in the medical record.

Responsible for preparing equipment during basic examinations, diagnostic procedures, and treatments using aseptic techniques.


Familiarity with medical terminology and medical supplies, assisting in maintaining equipment, ordering supplies, and cleaning and restocking treatment areas.

Ability to safely assist with the transfer of patients/residents to and from procedural areas, including but not limited to Radiology and other departments.

Ability to communicate directly with physicians, nursing staff, patients/residents, and their families, responsible for reporting any changes in the patient's/resident's condition.

Knowledge and capability to perform high-quality basic life support (BLS) and effectively utilize a LUCAS device.

Prepare and position stable patients/residents during transport.

Qualifications

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Completion of an accredited training program is necessary for licensing.


Must possess a thorough understanding of emergency medical technician (EMT) principles, practices, and techniques, including knowledge of how various equipment, such as monitors or defibrillators, function and how to troubleshoot potential issues.


Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required, and depending on location, national registry status as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) may be necessary.

Depending on state regulations, individuals may need to hold a state license. Completion of National Incident Management System (NIMS) ICS100, 200, and 700, along with continuing education hours as mandated by accreditation.

Additional training, workshops, or staff meetings attended as per policy.

Must possess a valid Driver's License and maintain a good driving record. Must be 18 years or older; approval is needed for those under 21 to drive. May not be required for those in a hospital setting. All driving policies, assignments, and insurance verification are determined by departmental leadership and staffing needs.
