About this Opportunity

We are seeking a skilled Transit Service Worker to join our team at the City of Cedar Rapids, IA. As a key member of our Transit team, you will be responsible for providing exceptional service to our community by ensuring the cleanliness and maintenance of our buses and facilities.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Vehicle Servicing: Fuel buses and support vehicles, check and fill automotive fluids, check tire pressure, report vehicle damage and defects, etc.
  • Cleaning and Maintenance: Wash and clean interiors and exteriors of buses and support vehicles, including proper clean-up of body fluid spills.
  • Light Maintenance and Repairs: Perform routine light maintenance and repairs to transit vehicles, such as headlights, changing windshield wipers, etc.
  • Farebox Management: Download farebox data and empty farebox vaults.
  • Driving and Transportation: Drive buses and service vehicles at the bus garage, to and from road calls and other off-site servicing locations, drive buses through the bus wash, cover routes for drivers as needed, etc.
  • Parking and Coordination: Park buses and coordinate bus assignments.
  • Facilities Maintenance: Perform maintenance and custodial services to transit facilities and passenger shelters, such as snow removal, mowing and weed control, garbage removal, cleaning floor drains, cleaning floors and windows, cleaning restrooms and office areas, painting and repair services, etc.
  • Adherence to Policies and Procedures: Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.
  • Attendance and Reliability: Attend work regularly at the designated place and time.
  • Continuous Improvement: Support continuous process improvement initiatives.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Perform related work as required.
Acceptable Experience and Training
  • Maintenance and/or custodial experience is preferred.
Required Special Qualifications
  • Must obtain a valid Commercial Driver's License Permit prior to appointment and a valid Medical Examiners Certificate prior to appointment.
  • Must obtain a valid Iowa Commercial Driver's License (Class B) with passenger and airbrake endorsements within two months from appointment. Training is provided.
Work Schedule
  • Monday-Friday 12:00pm-8:30pm; Rotating Saturdays
Hourly Rate

The Transit Service Worker position is covered under the Transit Bargaining Union, and all new hires begin employment at $24.92 per hour, regardless of years of experience. Employees in this classification receive a step increase on their anniversary.
