Job Summary

We are seeking a qualified Substitute Teacher to join our team at Schnitzer Family Campus - Mittleman Jewish Community Center & Portland Jewish Academy. As a Substitute Teacher, you will be responsible for following lesson plans and ensuring continuity in classroom lessons and activities while the classroom instructor is away.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain a safe and engaging learning environment that is responsive to the social/emotional, physical, cognitive, and language development of children in assigned classrooms.
  • Work closely with co-teachers in implementing planned lessons and activities.
  • Lead and participate in all classroom and play activities, responding to behavioral issues as they arise.
  • Supervise children to ensure safe play and effectively communicate with children at their individual developmental level.
  • Model appropriate problem-solving behavior and implement discipline and safety measures as necessary.
  • Observe, evaluate, and communicate effectively with children, parents, and other staff, maintaining confidentiality.
  • Serve meals in accordance with proper hygiene standards and maintain a food handler's card.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • At least one year of qualifying experience working with children 6 months to 6 years old.
  • Current First Aid, CPR, and Food Handler's certifications.
  • Current enrollment in the Oregon Central Background Registry.
Physical Requirements

Work is performed in an environment that is quite noisy and busy, and may include exposure to biological conditions including body fluids and waste, germs, and childhood illnesses. Physical requirements include lifting children or heavy items (up to 50 pounds unassisted), bending, stooping, reaching, standing, climbing, and walking. Work requires vision and hearing within normal ranges, and speaking ability sufficient to communicate effectively with students.
