Position Overview:

Job Summary

The City of Roanoke is in search of a dedicated Waste Collection Specialist to engage in essential tasks related to the collection of solid waste, bulk items, and recyclable materials. The ideal candidate will be responsible for maneuvering refuse carts from designated areas to collection vehicles for disposal; sorting recyclable materials at the curbside from designated containers and ensuring proper placement in the truck; retrieving refuse containers from commercial establishments and transferring contents into the collection vehicle; and gathering bulk and brush items from streets and alleys for proper disposal. Additionally, the candidate will operate machinery for loading, compressing, and unloading waste; assist in the unloading process at disposal facilities; maintain cleanliness of vehicles and equipment according to departmental standards; and report any violations of waste management regulations to the supervising driver. A high school diploma or GED is required, along with one to three months of relevant experience or training in heavy manual labor, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

This is a non-exempt role. Key Responsibilities

PRIMARY DUTIES
Engage in the collection of solid waste, bulk items, and recyclables.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include, but are not limited to:

- Maneuvering refuse carts from designated locations to collection vehicles for disposal
- Sorting recyclable materials at the curbside from designated containers and ensuring proper placement in the truck
- Retrieving refuse containers from businesses and transferring contents into the collection vehicle
- Collecting bulk items and brush from streets and alleys for disposal
- Operating machinery for loading, compressing, and unloading waste
- Assisting in the unloading process at disposal facilities
- Maintaining cleanliness around refuse containers and carts
- Cleaning vehicles and equipment in accordance with departmental policies
- Reporting any violations of waste management regulations to the supervising driver.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position does not include supervisory responsibilities.
