Overview:
The Lead Registered Nurse plays a pivotal role in fulfilling the mission of Northern Arizona Healthcare Corporation. Under the guidance of the Clinical Manager or Director, this position is tasked with supervising and coordinating patient care activities during assigned shifts. Acting as a champion for the team, the Lead RN ensures that the Clinical Manager or Director is informed of the specific needs of the unit. This role encompasses leadership responsibilities for nursing staff, including team leadership, preceptorship, and active participation in the healthcare team.

The Lead RN adheres to the ANA Scope of Practice, the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses, and the standards relevant to their specialty.


Responsibilities:
Patient Care

  • Address and resolve patient and family concerns, communicating effectively through appropriate channels.
  • Document incidents, events, interventions, and responses from patients, staff, and physicians.
  • Act as a patient advocate.
  • Prioritize and problem-solve to adapt to changes in patient conditions.
  • Collaborate with other departments to facilitate smooth patient throughput, including discharge planning and education.
  • Work alongside physicians and healthcare professionals to ensure staffing patterns align with the necessary skill mix for quality patient care.
  • Serve as a liaison among patients, physicians, administrative coordinators, staffing offices, transfer centers, care coordination departments, unit staff, and ancillary departments.
  • Provide resources and assistance to staff in patient care, including support with order entry.
Administrative

  • Manage staffing for current and upcoming shifts, determining appropriate staff levels and skill mix to ensure quality care and unit productivity.
  • Assign patient care teams and delegate activities to unit and ancillary staff.
  • Address workflow challenges, ensuring incidents are documented and corrective actions are implemented.
  • Make patient assignments based on individual needs and available staff resources.
  • Identify suitable referral and educational resources for patients and staff.
  • Advocate for both patients and staff as needs arise.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of organizational policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with best practices among staff.
Coaching and Development

  • Ensure staff accountability, monitor performance, and provide constructive feedback in real-time.
  • Identify opportunities for performance improvement and provide necessary resources and education.
  • Regularly acknowledge employees for exemplary performance and improvements.
  • Collaborate with the clinical manager on employee performance evaluations.
  • Communicate effectively with the clinical manager regarding staff performance.
  • Offer coaching to nursing staff.
  • Provide input to nursing leadership on employment actions, including evaluations, promotions, corrective actions, and terminations.
Education

  • Engage in creating and maintaining a learning environment supported by evidence-based practice and research.
  • Focus on personal development, participating in professional interactions with peers and students.
  • Collaborate with peers and other healthcare providers, participating in ongoing in-service and educational seminars.
  • Mentor and educate colleagues and students.
Compliance/Safety

  • Report safety-related incidents promptly using the designated reporting tools; attend all safety training programs; perform work safely; monitor the work environment for potential safety issues and ensure compliance among others.
  • Adhere to regulatory and organizational standards impacting patient care and safety, as well as all hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Stay current with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies relevant to the role.
  • Ensure all required certifications and licenses are up-to-date and valid.
  • Complete all mandatory training and job-specific modules within the specified timeframe.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of assessments, interventions, electronic medical records entries, and patient responses.

Qualifications:
Education


Registered Nurses hired after a specified date must graduate from a BSN program within a designated timeframe of hire into an RN position; the original due date remains unchanged if promoted to a Lead RN position.


Registered Nurses hired prior to a specified date without a BSN or those without a BSN-in-process promoted to Lead RN must obtain their BSN degree within a designated timeframe of their promotion date.

If the requirement is not met by the due date, the Lead Nurse may need to step down from their position.


Existing Lead RNs:

Employees in Lead Nurse roles as of a specified date without a BSN must obtain their BSN degrees by a designated deadline.

If the requirement is not met by that date, the Lead Nurse may need to step down from their position.


Promotions to Lead RN:

Specialized Units:
Completion of required training programs within a specified timeframe of hire.

Certification & Licensures

Active, unrestricted RN License or valid participating compact license - Required

BLS - Required

Additional certifications required within specified timeframes.

Employees will maintain appropriate clinical competencies for their assigned roles.

Experience

Minimum of one year of experience as an RN is preferred.

Specialized Units:
Two years of bedside nursing experience is required.

Healthcare is a rapidly evolving environment, and technology is integrated into nearly all aspects of patient care. Colleagues must possess a fundamental understanding of computers and be competent in using basic software programs.
