Seattle, Washington, United States Blue Origin Full time

At Blue Origin, we aspire to create a future where countless individuals can thrive in space, contributing to the well-being of our planet. Our mission focuses on developing safe, reusable, and cost-effective space vehicles and systems, all within a framework that prioritizes safety, teamwork, and inclusivity. Join our dynamic team of innovators as we embark on groundbreaking ventures in the realm of space exploration.

Senior Aerodynamics Specialist - New Glenn Program

This position plays a crucial role in the advancement and operation of New Glenn, a robust, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle designed for regular transport of both personnel and cargo to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar space, and beyond. The first stage of this vehicle is fully reusable, and it has been engineered from the outset to support human missions.

As a member of a dedicated and skilled team, you will engage in all facets of aerodynamic and aerothermodynamic design for various phases of flight, including atmospheric transitions. Your contributions will significantly influence the systems throughout their lifecycle, from initial design concepts to operational execution and ongoing engineering support. Key responsibilities include the creation of aerodynamic and aerothermodynamic models and databases for launch and reentry vehicles, as well as the analysis of corresponding flight mechanics and dynamics through a combination of analytical methods, numerical simulations, and experimental testing.

We seek an individual who can leverage their technical acumen, leadership capabilities, and commitment to excellence to enhance the safety of human spaceflight. A genuine passion for our mission and vision is essential.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • At least 2 years of experience in space vehicle aerodynamics, aerothermodynamics, or flight mechanics.
  • Solid understanding of aerodynamic principles across various flight regimes (subsonic, transonic, supersonic, hypersonic, and free molecular flow).
  • Proven problem-solving abilities in technical contexts.
  • Experience in developing aerodynamic models.
  • Familiarity with automation and data manipulation through programming and scripting languages.
  • Ability to build trust, foster positive professional relationships, and enhance our culture of inclusivity.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or legally admitted refugee or asylee.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree or higher in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • Experience with launch systems, spacecraft, and reentry vehicles.
  • Expertise in crafting and simulating 3 DOF and 6 DOF trajectories.
  • Proficient in using CFD solvers such as CFD++, FUN3D, LAURA, DAC, along with pre/post-processing tools like Link3D, Pointwise, Ensight, and Tecplot.
  • Experience in supporting wind tunnel and flight testing, including data analysis and post-flight evaluations.
  • Knowledge of stability and control design principles.
  • Experience in developing aerodynamic tools using MATLAB, Python, or C/C++.

Compensation: The salary range for this position is competitive and commensurate with experience.

Inclusivity Statement: We recognize that not all candidates will meet every qualification. At Blue Origin, we are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace. If you are enthusiastic about this role but do not meet every requirement, we encourage you to apply.

Equal Employment Opportunity: Blue Origin is proud to be an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. We are dedicated to attracting and retaining a diverse workforce and promoting an environment where all employees feel valued and respected.
