Job Overview

The Quality Improvement Specialist for the Burn Care Program is a Registered Nurse who operates under the guidance of the Burn Program Manager to oversee clinical, operational, and quality enhancement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions

Clinical Duties
  • Participates in Burn Activations to act as a resource to improve team performance and support ongoing process enhancements.
  • Collaborates with the Burn Team to ensure coverage for critical responsibilities and tasks.
  • Acts as a resource for patients and families to guarantee optimal burn care delivery.
  • Engages in Multidisciplinary rounds with the Burn team.
  • Serves as a liaison to clinical departments involved in the care of burn patients.
  • Facilitates multidisciplinary quality improvement efforts related to burn patient care and outcomes.
  • Assists in the design of burn process improvement and continuous quality enhancement projects.
  • Conducts concurrent medical record reviews and data collection for complications and quality metrics.
  • Coordinates the Burn quality improvement program alongside the Burn Program Manager and Medical Director.
  • Analyzes clinical and Burn Registry data with leadership to enhance burn patient care.
  • Collaborates with the institutional quality improvement program manager and burn specialists.
  • Identifies, reviews, monitors, and tracks quality improvement opportunities at the system and provider level, escalating cases as necessary.
Quality Assurance Duties

  • Facilitates overall quality and consistency of the Burn program.
  • Evaluates quality assurance filters as defined by relevant standards and internal metrics for process improvement.
  • Prepares monthly, quarterly, and annual quality assurance reports.
  • Works with the Burn Medical Director and Program Manager to establish and maintain quality indicators for the Burn program.
  • Coordinates variance reviews with the Burn Medical Director and other departments.
  • Integrates burn quality improvement with the overall hospital quality program.
  • Provides follow-up and performance improvement feedback to external hospitals and EMS agencies.
Registry Support Duties

  • Reviews burn admission records for data collection and inclusion in the burn registry.
  • Analyzes records for compliance with quality assurance standards set by the Burn Committee.
  • Maintains high validity in burn registry data for accurate benchmarking.
  • Conducts routine checks of abstracted data for accuracy.
  • Identifies and escalates suspicious or invalid cases to the Burn Program Manager.
  • Collaborates with the burn registrar to track defined complications.

Required Minimum Education

Bachelor's Degree in Nursing Required

Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s)

All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.
  • Registered Nurse (Single State) or RN - Multi-state Compact
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - Instructor
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - Instructor or ACLS - Provisional
  • Advanced Burn Life Support

Additional License(s) and Certification(s)

Required Minimum Experience:

Minimum 3 years of clinical nursing experience in burn and/or critical care required.

Experience as Burn RN Preferred

Required Minimum Skills:

Demonstrated intermediate to advanced computer skills.

Ability to work collaboratively and take direction.

Strong communication skills including verbal, written, and presentation abilities.

Quality Assurance, LEA, and/or Performance Improvement background preferred.

Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to prioritize workload, meet deadlines, and work independently.

Ability to review and interpret patient care documentation in medical records.
