Position Overview:

The Clinical RN Coordinator for Oncology and Hematology plays a vital role in managing both clinical and administrative functions associated with outpatient medical practices. This position is essential in delivering high-quality, safe patient care to a vulnerable patient demographic.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Support the supervising physician during patient consultations, which includes conducting physical assessments and gathering health histories. Collaborate closely with infusion staff to ensure comprehensive care.
  2. Address and appropriately direct incoming patient inquiries related to care. Provide guidance to patients and their families regarding medication regimens and treatment protocols.
  3. Gather and monitor clinical data, including laboratory and imaging results, to confirm that all necessary tests are conducted.
  4. Discuss abnormal findings with the primary physician, inform patients of their results, and coordinate necessary follow-up actions, such as additional testing or referrals.
  5. Formulate treatment plans that align with established NCCN and ASCO guidelines, ensuring that patients receive the appropriate oncological care in conjunction with their primary physician. Utilize the Intellidose system for documenting and managing prescribed treatments, ensuring safety through accurate dose calculations based on lab results and patient condition.
  6. Educate patients and their families on cancer treatment processes, providing literature and clear explanations about medication administration, safety protocols, and how to recognize and manage potential side effects.
  7. Contribute to the quality of care for oncology and hematology patients by engaging in performance improvement initiatives as directed by the Chief of Oncology or Nurse Manager.
  8. Ensure patient compliance with required educational and safety programs throughout their treatment journey.
  9. Assist in training newly hired nursing staff on patient care protocols and oversee the performance of medical assistants and secretarial staff to maintain high standards of patient care.
  10. Maintain a thorough understanding of billing and coding regulations to ensure compliance and support the financial health of the organization. Provide necessary medical documentation to insurance providers to facilitate reimbursement for treatments and tests.
  11. Support the physician in quality reporting initiatives.
  12. Conduct routine diagnostic procedures, including blood tests and ECGs, and assist with outpatient medical procedures as needed.
  13. Collaborate with a multidisciplinary healthcare team to coordinate comprehensive services for oncology and hematology patients, ensuring seamless care across various specialties.
  14. Ensure that medical equipment is maintained in accordance with hospital standards.
  15. Fulfill all compliance responsibilities associated with the role.
  16. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Education: Associate's Degree in Nursing required.
Licensure: Current RN license in the state of Connecticut. Certification in Chemotherapy and Provider from the Oncology Nursing Society is required. Minimum of three years of nursing experience is necessary, with a preference for candidates holding a BSN and OCN certification.

Working Conditions:
Physical demands include the ability to exert up to 35 lbs. of force and significant exposure to various environmental factors. Manual dexterity and coordination are essential for this role.
