Clinical Oncology Nurse Coordinator

Job Summary:
The Clinical RN Coordinator-Oncology/Hematology is responsible for coordinating clinical and administrative activities related to the outpatient physician's practice, ensuring high-quality, safe patient care for a high-risk, disease-specific population.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist supervising physicians with patient visits, including physical assessments and health histories, and coordinate care with infusion staff.
- Respond to and refer patient care-related phone calls, instructing patients and caregivers on medications and treatment instructions.
- Collect and track clinical data, including laboratory, radiology, and pathology results, to ensure receipt of ordered tests.
- Review abnormal data with primary physicians, advise patients of results, and coordinate necessary interventions.
- Develop treatment plans to ensure appropriate oncologic treatment according to NCCN and ASCO guidelines.
- Order and document delivery of prescribed interventions, utilizing the Intellidose computer system, and ensure doses are calculated based on patient laboratory data and performance status.
- Educate patients and caregivers on all aspects of cancer treatment, including oral and parental administration, safe handling procedures, and side effect management.
- Ensure oncology/hematology patients receive best-quality care by participating in performance improvement activities designated by the Chief of Oncology or Nurse Manager.
- Conduct and ensure patients are enrolled in and comply with mandated education and prescribed safety programs.
- Assist in training newly hired nurses in the care, triage, and complete assessment of quality and scope of practice.
- Supervise medical assistants and medical secretaries to ensure excellent care is provided to patients.
- Establish and maintain understanding of billing and coding regulations, including CPT, ICD, HCPCS, and third-party billing.
- Provide medical information to insurance companies to obtain reimbursement for ordered tests or prescription medication.
- Maintain medical records and provide appropriate documentation per department guidelines/standards.
- Assist physicians in participating in quality reporting programs.
- Perform routine diagnostic tests, such as complete blood counts, electrocardiograms, and phlebotomies, and assist physicians with routine outpatient procedures.
- Work with the multidisciplinary healthcare team to coordinate services for oncology/hematology patients.
- Maintain medical equipment, including code carts, CBC machines, INR machines, and automated blood pressure machines.
- Fulfill all compliance responsibilities related to the position.
Requirements:
State of CT RN license, Oncology Nursing Society Chemotherapy and Provider certification, and a minimum of three years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
BSN, Oncology Nursing Society OCN certification, and experience in oncology nursing.
Working Conditions:
Manual skills, occupational risk, medium to heavy effort, and significant exposure to dirt, odors, noise, and human waste.
