Summary/Objective
Assist in the management of hatchery and aquaculture operations to support fisheries programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute advanced hatchery tasks, including the documentation, compilation, analysis, and maintenance of data records and operational activities. This encompasses sampling, chemical treatments, and fish health evaluations.
- Supervise spawning and egg collection processes, ensuring proper care for millions of eggs, fry, and fingerlings during initial production stages.
- Conduct fish health evaluations and collaborate with the Aquatic Animal Health Specialist for diagnosing fish ailments. Work alongside the state veterinarian to secure Veterinary Feed Directives for necessary medications.
- Coordinate vaccination initiatives for all production fish to mitigate bacterial and viral threats.
- Diagnose and treat fish ailments independently, utilizing appropriate therapeutics or antibiotics to manage and prevent diseases.
- Oversee rearing units under treatment and maintain an inventory of chemicals.
- Safely transport cold and warm water fish statewide, requiring a Class B CDL with tanker and air brake endorsements. This may necessitate overnight travel. Assess and calculate loading capacities and densities.
- Assist in the upkeep of grounds, including cleaning, pond treatments, mowing, and maintaining complex hatchery machinery.
- Perform general administrative tasks, such as responding to inquiries, managing correspondence, maintaining publications, procuring supplies, and completing accurate purchasing logs.
- Address public inquiries and concerns regarding the Missouri Department of Conservation.
- Monitor water quality parameters including dissolved oxygen, flow rates, nitrogen levels, turbidity, and temperature.
- Document, compile, analyze, and maintain comprehensive records of data, including fish inventory, chemical treatments, and related supplies.
- Operate heavy machinery, including crane trucks and aquatic weed-cutting boats, in challenging environments. Use chainsaws safely in proximity to waterways.
- Assist in developing educational initiatives, conducting group tours, and supporting angler recruitment efforts.
- Adhere to established processes to ensure compliance with relevant policies and regulations.
- As part of the hatchery team, manage fish valued at millions of dollars, understanding the financial implications of fish loss on the Conservation Department and local communities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Associate's Degree in Natural Resources, Fisheries, or Biological Sciences.
- Three to five years of relevant professional experience.
- Must possess a valid driver's license and be eligible to obtain a CDL.
- Ability to complete an approved boating safety course and acquire a Missouri Boating Safety Certification Card within six months of employment, if applicable.
- Proficient in operating boats, outboard motors, land maintenance equipment, power tools, and large trucks with trailers.
- Competent in using office equipment, including computers, calculators, cameras, scanners, and printers.
- Detail-oriented with strong record-keeping and data entry skills.
- Basic carpentry, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing skills.
- Extensive knowledge of fish health, pathology, and production, with experience in fishery science and wildlife management.
- Ability to make independent decisions and respond effectively to emergencies.
- Strong interpersonal skills to build effective relationships with civic groups, Department staff, and the public.
- Capable of operating, repairing, or fabricating specialized aquaculture equipment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
- Regularly work outdoors in varying temperatures and conditions.
- Occasionally exposed to loud noises requiring hearing protection. Work in hazardous locations and adverse weather conditions.
- May require travel and work during various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- This position is essential for operational continuity, requiring attendance during emergencies.
- Handle and administer hazardous chemicals safely.
- Ability to navigate grounds, both indoors and outdoors.
- Regularly operate tools and machinery, relocating equipment as necessary.
- Frequent communication and exchange of information.
- Visual acuity for tasks requiring close and distant vision, as well as color differentiation.
- Regularly lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds.
- Consistent attendance is a critical function of this role.
- Frequently required to stand, walk, and drive for extended periods.

This position is classified as Nonexempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Employees must accept compensatory time in lieu of cash payments per the Department's policies.
