Position Overview:
The Division of Animal Resources at Emory National Primate Research Center is currently in search of a full-time Animal Care Assistant Trainee to join our committed Animal Care team. This role involves supporting husbandry and various activities essential to the daily operations concerning non-human primates (NHP).
The ideal candidate will adhere to established protocols for the proper care and welfare of the animals, demonstrating motivation, reliability, attention to detail, a positive demeanor, and compassion for both animals and humans.
If you possess experience with laboratory animals (preferably NHP) and are knowledgeable about animal observations and cage washing responsibilities, this is a remarkable opportunity to contribute to life-saving research and positively impact the scientific community.
The Animal Care Assistant Trainee is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the facility and ensuring an adequate supply of food and bedding materials, including personal protective equipment (PPE).
This position requires collaboration with fellow technicians according to a schedule set by the Associate Operations Manager, with a willingness to rotate through all Emory DAR facilities.
The ideal candidate should have a genuine passion for research and animal care/husbandry.The Animal Care Assistant Trainee guarantees the highest standards of laboratory animal care and research support, while effectively communicating with colleagues, management, principal investigators, research staff, students, and other support services.
This role reports directly to the Animal Care Supervisor and is considered essential, necessitating some weekend and holiday work as part of a rotating schedule.Collaborate. Innovate. Serve.

Emory National Primate Research Center (EPC) is dedicated to uncovering causes, preventions, treatments, and cures for diseases, thereby improving the health and lives of both humans and animals globally.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Operate cage washers and ensure that all equipment is functioning properly.
Assist in the collection of biological samples such as blood, urine, and feces from animals for medical research.
Perform related duties as necessary.
Employees in this role may be required to work with, take specific precautions against, and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The ability to read and write and to lift up to 75 pounds.
Positions in this classification may require a valid Georgia driver's license and an insurable driving record.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Demonstrated strong work habits, including the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Experience in an animal research environment with continuous contact with animals.
Understanding of established guidelines for humane care and welfare of laboratory animals as outlined by AAALAC.
Knowledge of hygiene principles, safety protocols, and basic animal husbandry.
Effective communication skills, including the ability to write and comprehend English and follow both written and verbal instructions.
Certifications from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).
Experience in a biosafety environment.
Proficiency in computer skills.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Hours/Weekends/Holidays: 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, alternating weekends and holidays.
This position involves an indoor/outdoor work environment, which may require working in adverse weather conditions.
Exposure to biohazards and potentially dangerous animals is part of the role.
The work environment may involve some risks or hazards, necessitating adherence to basic safety precautions.
Maintain an adequate inventory of necessary supplies and equipment.
Assist with minor repairs and upkeep of the animal housing facility.
Work is typically performed in a standard laboratory setting.
Requires the ability to lift up to 75 lbs. and move/push heavy racks a short distance.
Requires the ability to bend, kneel, and/or squat.
