About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Applied Scientist to join our Network Engineering, Scheduling, and Technology (NEST) Science Team. As an Applied Scientist, you will be responsible for designing and developing complex statistical, machine learning, and optimization models to drive business and technical solutions for Amazon's Middle Mile Transportation business.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop statistical, machine learning, and optimization models to predict operations behavior, labor requirements, and inputs for labor management at Amazon's warehouse sites and transportation network.
  • Prototype models in software languages such as Python and translate prototype models to production-quality, large-scale software systems.
  • Contribute to the build of decision-making models, such as recommender systems, classification algorithms, and agent-based simulations.
  • Create, enhance, and maintain technical documentation and present to other Scientists.
  • Retrieve, synthesize, and present critical data in a format immediately useful to model building or improving model performance.
About the Team

The NEST Science Team is responsible for prototyping, building, and productionizing mathematical models that reduce transportation cost and improve customer experience in Amazon's Middle Mile network. Our team is equipped with techniques from Operations Research, Machine Learning, and Simulation, and we use these models to govern scheduling and equipment selection of hundreds of thousands of truck movements, optimize network configurations, determine transit times between nodes, and simulate network flow under uncertainty for informed decision making.

Requirements
  • Advanced degree in engineering, technology, computer science, machine learning, robotics, operations research, statistics, mathematics, or equivalent quantitative field.
  • Experience building machine learning models or developing algorithms for business applications.
  • Experience programming in Java, C++, Python, or related languages.
  • Experience with SQL and an RDBMS (e.g., Oracle) or Data Warehouse.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience implementing algorithms using both toolkits and self-developed code.
  • Publications at top-tier peer-reviewed conferences or journals.
